Time and time again, we receive phone calls from students who failed the bar exam because of their Multistate Performance Test (MPT) score. Most students do not know (or often, forget) that while there are only two MPT questions on the bar exam, the MPT is worth 20% of their score in a Uniform Bar Exam jurisdiction. This is the equivalent of 70 multiple choice questions! Since students do not realize the importance of the MPT, they do not adequately prepare for it. Often, they put it off until the last minute. It isn’t until they receive low scores on the MPT that they realize that they must give it more attention. To adequately prepare for the MPT, we recommend our MPT seminar!

Which States Have the Hardest Bar Exams?
in Bar ExamWhich States Have the Hardest Bar Exams?
Every law student probably wants to know which states have the hardest bar exams. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. Of course, you can look at the overall pass rate and see which one is the lowest (California), but that doesn’t really tell the whole story. States can offer incredibly difficult exams, but if their takers prepare well, this won’t reflect in pass rates. Or maybe the exam itself isn’t too outrageous, but the students taking it don’t have the proper education. You can search the internet and find countless different opinions on what the hardest bar exams are. While one state does tend to show up the most frequently, good luck reaching a consensus on what comes next.
It is important not to let pass rates scare you away from a particular state. Consider the type of material on the exam, the exam’s format, and even the duration of the exam. Many factors come into play when defining the hardest bar exams, and the exam that is best for you. Don’t let your career path be determined by statistics alone because you (and your study habits!) play the biggest role in your bar exam fate!

4 Critical Considerations For The Portability Of UBE Scores
in Bar ExamFour Critical Rules & Considerations For The Portability Of UBE Scores
One of the great things about taking the Uniform Bar Exam is that you might be able to use that score to avoid sitting for the bar in multiple states. It can be a real drag to have to consider taking another bar exam each time you even think about moving. Taking one bar exam is stressful enough! However, when thinking about whether taking the UBE is best for you, you need to remember the limits on the portability of UBE scores. Unfortunately, they aren’t good forever, and you can’t just take it wherever you want to go.
It is important to chart your potential path, thinking even years ahead of time. It’s also always worth it to contact your current and possible future jurisdictions to make sure they don’t have any unique transfer rules. You don’t want to find yourself in an unexpected situation and be forced to halt your practice while you sit for another exam!

What It’s Like To Take The Washington, DC Bar Exam
in Bar ExamWhat It’s Like To Take the Washington, DC Bar Exam
While studying for the Washington, DC bar exam I often wondered what it would be like to take it. Sure, I knew the exam had three parts (the MPT, the MEE, and the MBE) and that it was spread over two days. I knew that it would be at the convention center in DC and that I could only bring certain items. But what was it really like to actually take the DC bar exam? If you have the same question, hopefully my experience can give you some insight!

Studying for the bar exam is a major time commitment. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to study full time. While many law school graduates are able to dedicate 8-10 hours per day to studying for the bar exam, others need to continue working during their study period and can’t dedicate that amount of time. If you fall into the latter category, there’s no need to panic. You just need to use your limited study time as effectively as possible. Here are some tips for creating and implementing a successful part time bar exam study schedule.

Oregon Administers UBE and Lowers Passing Score
The Oregon Board of Bar Examiners administered the first Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) in July of 2017. In 2017, Oregon also lowered its passing score (or “cut score”) from 284 to 274 after complaints from law school deans (who pushed for a cut score of 266). A score of 284 would have been the highest score required to pass in a UBE jurisdiction. Read more
