Why Do I Have To Take The MPRE?

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (“MPRE”) measures an individual’s knowledge of the rules governing the professional conduct of lawyers. The MPRE is offered three times a year in March, August, and November. The MPRE is a 2-hour test that consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. Those 60 questions are broken down into 50 scored questions and 10 experimental questions. You may be wondering “why on earth do I have to take the MPRE?” We hear you and can let you know that thousands of law students before you have echoed the same sentiments. Why Do I Have To Take The MPRE?

1. It’s required.

The first reason why you have to take the MPRE is simply that you have to take the MPRE. The MPRE is by no means an optional test that students can decide if they want to take. As we mentioned briefly above, the MPRE is required by almost every state in order to start practicing law. That means even if you’ve taken and passed the Bar Exam, you can’t start practicing law without first passing the MPRE. Every state has a different passing score and some states have requirements regarding when you can take the MPRE, so be sure to check your state’s requirements!

2. Legal ethics are a BIG deal.

Ethics are critical in a lawyer’s daily practice, which is another reason why you have to take the MPRE.  While you won’t be practicing law that incorporates every subject you learn in law school, legal ethics are highly practical. Lawyers frequently face ethical dilemmas, and it’s crucial that they understand how to navigate and handle them. While the hypotheticals you read during preparation for the MPRE can seem farfetched, you’d be surprised! Knowing how to manage the attorney-client relationship, handle client funds, and protect attorney-client privileges can come up daily as a practicing attorney.

3. It prepares you for the bar exam.

Finally, you need to take the MPRE because it prepares you for the bar exam. In some jurisdictions, the concepts appearing on the MPRE can also be found on the essay portion of the bar exam. Taking the MPRE familiarizes you with the subject material in a formal test-taking setting similar to the bar exam. While the MPRE is not a reproduction of the Bar Exam, it gets students acquainted with proctored test-taking. Preparing for the MPRE using outlines, study guides, and video lectures is similar to preparation for the Bar Exam, but with only one subject to study, it does not take nearly as long!
