1. Stop answering questions and start memorizing the law.

The first thing to do to boost your MBE score is to stop answering questions and start looking at the black letter law. If you don’t have the law memorized, most of what you do will be “guessing” at questions. Or, you will spend valuable time trying to think of the elements of the law.

Instead of doing that, use active review techniques to memorize the law. This means you should be quizzing yourself on the law, rewriting the law, making charts, diagrams, or mnemonics, etc. Don’t passively read your outlines. Actively engage with them! 2. Focus on the highly tested areas of law.  

Not all areas of law are tested equally. Focus on negligence, free speech, homicide, hearsay, relevancy. Don’t obsess over RAP or present and future interests.

3. Start by answering questions one-by-one and write down when you get an answer wrong. 

Instead of racing through a bunch of questions and wondering why your score does not improve, answer questions one by one. Read the question. Dissect it. See if you can recall the law. Then apply the law to the facts. Pick your answer choice.

Importantly, if you get a question wrong, then write down what law you didn’t know or why you got it wrong. It is helpful to have a notepad next to you for this purpose! Then keep on reviewing the legal pad.

A lot of students say “I read the answer explanation and now I know.” But you don’t know. Memorization is hard work. If all you do is read the answer explanation once, you will forget what you learned. So keep writing on your notepad so you can keep reviewing!

4. Use real MBE questions.  

The last tip to boost your MBE score is to use real MBE questions. Don’t use course-invented questions. The actual official questions are much more likely to mimic what you will see on test day. Read more about where to find real MBE questions here.
