Where to find free Multistate Performance Test Sample Questions
Where to find free Multistate Performance Test Sample Questions
If you are preparing to take the Uniform Bar Exam (or any bar exam that has the Multistate Performance Test — or “MPT” — as a component of the exam) you may wonder where to find Multistate Performance Test sample questions.
In this post, we tell you where to find free MPT sample questions. First, we will give you a little background on the MPT.
What is the MPT?
The MPT is one of three components of the Uniform Bar Exam. (If you are not in a Uniform Bar Exam state, you may just have one MPT, which is probably worth about 10% of your overall score.) Note that some states, like California, have a “performance test” component but write their own. In other words, while they administer a performance test (“PT”), they do not administer the multistate performance test (MPT) written by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. If you are in a jurisdiction that writes its own performance test, please check your jurisdiction’s website to see if they have examples of past MPT questions.
The Multistate Performance Test on the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) consists of two, 90-minute “real world” legal tasks and is worth 20% of your total UBE score. The MPT tests real-life legal tasks that attorneys often face in practice, such as drafting a complaint, objective memorandum or client letter.
Unlike the other portions of the bar exam, you do not need to have any outside legal knowledge to answer an MPT question. Rather, the MPT is meant to test a student’s ability to use fundamental lawyering skills in a simulated work-like environment. You will be provided with the facts of your case as well as a library that contains the law. Please see this post for a detailed overview of what the MPT is and how to conquer it.
Where can I find free Multistate Performance Test Sample Questions?
For a free resource, we recommend you peruse the MPTs from July 2008 until February 2013 here. These are directly on the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) website. The NCBE is the organization that writes the MPT. You can see the questions from 2008 – 2013 as well as the NCBE’s analysis for each question.
If you are looking for more than just sample questions and want to review several past MPTs and student answers for free, please check out this post where we link to resources that contain both questions and student answers free of charge. (Note that these resources do not publish the NCBE point sheets.)
If you are looking for additional practice, our MPT books are among the best sources of MPT questions. Not only do we include the question and NCBE point sheets for the past several years worth of MPTs, but we also include an example of a high-scoring student answer so you can see if you are formatting your MPT answer properly. If you are looking to spend less time trying to track down MPT questions and answers, then it may be worth it to just purchase the MPT books so you have everything in one place!
