Many people have been contacting us and asking us if it is worth it to appeal their bar exam scores. Many clients are very curious about their prospects of passing the Michigan bar exam on appeal. We wrote a post about this last administration but given the high influx of calls, we figured it would be worth it to quickly update the post for this time.

A big factor in making the decision to appeal is to figure out how many points you need to pass the Michigan bar exam on appeal.  Since the Board of Law Examiner’s uses an undisclosed scoring method, it is difficult to discern based on scores alone.  We found a better way to accurately determine what you need.

What is the percentage of Michigan bar exam appeals that pass on appeal?

Note: This post was updated in February, 2016. We get asked this frequently – and the answer is: We don’t know! We have heard a lot of statistics – “20 percent of Michigan bar exam appeals pass.” We have also heard this statistic: “1/3 of those who write their own appeals are successful” The problem is, we have no idea where these statistics come from (besides a lot of people repeating them!). . .

Are you considering writing a Michigan bar exam appeal? Are you wondering whether it is worth it to appeal your Michigan bar exam score?

A big factor in making the decision to appeal is to figure out how many points you actually need to write a successful Michigan bar exam appeal.  With the new scoring method (which looks like they are just adding 32 or 33 points to everyone’s raw essay score to get the scaled essay score, at least this February 2015 round), it is even harder to figure out how many points are needed to write a successful appeal.

Should I Write my Own Michigan Bar Exam Appeal—or Have Someone Write it on My Behalf?

Before you ask the question of whether you should write your own appeal or have someone write it for you, you should ask the question: Should I appeal my bar exam score?  If you arrive at the conclusion “yes” then you have to decide whether you want to hire someone to write it for you or whether you want to write it yourself.

This question, “Should I write my own Michigan bar exam appeal” does not have one right answer.  In fact, to answer this question, you will need to ask yourself a few more questions, listed below.
