Below is the most updated version of our MPT Frequency Chart. You will notice that objective memos and persuasive briefs are the most common tasks. Interestingly, examinees were tasked with writing TWO objective memos on the July 2019 exam. Examinees should definitely be prepared to write an objective memo on any bar exam—they have become so ubiquitous that we would not be at all surprised to see at least one every administration!

In addition to objective memos and persuasive briefs, letters are the third most common task.  Letters can include both demand letters (e.g., write a letter on behalf of your client to the client’s adversary) and opinion letters (e.g., write a letter to your client outlining their best course of action on a particular subject).

While the options for the type of task that you could face on the MPT are endless, the frequency with which the other types of tasks are tested is far less than those mentioned above. Nonetheless, we would not be surprised to see one wildcard task paired with a more common task, such as an objective memo. While they are less predictable, wildcard tasks often provide more guidance in the library and, thus, can actually be easier if you follow directions.  It is important that you practice wildcard tasks as you study for the exam so that you have a plan of attack should you see a wildcard task on your MPT.

Each of the different types of tasks requires a slightly different approach. Therefore, it is crucial that you practice multiple MPTs as you are studying for the bar exam. Having a plan of attack for an MPT and practicing it is the best way of increasing your chances of a great score!
