How Much Time Do I Have To Answer Each MBE Question?
How Many Minutes Do I Have To Answer Each MBE Question?
Time is crucial for every part of the bar exam, but especially so for the MBE. With 200 questions to answer in 6 hours, correctly pacing yourself is pivotal for success. In this post, we break down how much time you have for each MBE question, whether you take the bar exam under regular conditions or extended time.
How Many Minutes Do I Have To Answer Each MBE Question?
1. Regular timing conditions
During the MBE portion of the bar exam, you have 6 hours to complete 200 multiple choice questions. So, if you take the bar exam under normal timing conditions, you will have, on average, 1.8 minutes, or 1 minute and 48 seconds, to answer each MBE question.
As a goal, try to answer, during your practice, 9 questions every 15 minutes. If you approach the bar exam this way, you will finish with around 10 minutes to spare. (Some students find this more helpful than trying to answer 33 questions per hour because by one hour they may already be too far behind!)
If you are permitted to bring a watch to the exam, set your watch to noon and try to stay on track as follows:
- 12:00 – begin exam
- 12:15 – 9 questions completed
- 12:30 – 18 questions completed
- 12:45 – 27 questions completed
- 1:00 – 36 questions completed
- 1:15 – 45 questions completed
- 1:30 – 54 questions completed
- 1:45 – 63 questions completed
- 2:00 – 72 questions completed
- 2:15 – 81 questions completed
- 2:30 – 90 questions completed
- 2:45 – 99 questions completed
- (Then you have about 10-15 minutes to spare or catch up!)
2. Extended time conditions
If you get an additional 25% extended time, that changes your goal. Under these circumstances, you would 2.25 minutes, or 2 minutes, 15 seconds, to answer each question. If you get 50% extended time, you have 2.7 minutes, or 2 minutes, 42 second per question.
With extended time, you also can change your goal for how many questions to answer per 15 minutes. For someone who gets an extra 25% of time, if you aim to complete 7 MBE questions per 15 minutes, you should finish comfortably. If you get 50% extended time, aim to finish 6 MBE questions every 15 minutes to finish with time to spare.
