Taking the Uniform Bar Exam in February?
Here are a few things to be aware of!
If you are taking the Uniform Bar Exam in February, you may wonder how it differs from a July bar exam. Here, we tell you a few differences to be aware of.
Taking the Uniform Bar Exam in February?
Here are a few things to be aware of!
There will be less bar exam takers.
In February, in virtually every state, there are less bar exam takers than July. The July exam is the “traditional” exam than those on a standard three-year JD path take. The February bar exam tends to be composed of repeat takers and nontraditional students.
This may mean you are in a smaller testing center (which is nice for nerves!). Or you will simply be competing with less students, which is helpful to know.
Bar exam takers are (hopefully) a little more relaxed.
We have found that February bar exam takers tend to be a little more relaxed. This may be because they have taken it before (so it is not their first time taking a bar exam). Or, it may be because February takers tend to know less people (which cuts down on the nervous chatter!).
You will be competing with a higher percentage of “repeat takers.”
Whether you are taking a Uniform Bar Exam or not, there are more repeat takers at the February bar exam. Those who failed the July bar exam often take the February bar exam. This is comforting because you are not competing with the population of examinees who graduated at the top of their class! You are competing with people who have failed the bar exam in the past.
The pass rate will be lower, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.
The pass rate will be lower, simply because the number of repeat takers is higher. This is not a “bad” thing. Some people think the February bar exam is harder because of the pass rate. But we actually think that competing against repeat takers makes it slightly easier to pass. While some repeat takers are dedicated to turning their bar exam score around, others barely study or don’t change their study habits and just keep taking the exam until they pass (or give up). It is the latter category of student that makes the pass rate lower.
