COVID-19 has changed how a large portion of bar exam takers approach the exam in 2020. A consequence of this is that many students take their bar exam at home. We’ve had a ton of questions about this, particularly “What is an online bar exam like?” In this post, we provide a video Q&A with a July 2020 bar exam taker and provide key takeaways from the conversation.

In this article, I’ll discuss four things I wish I would have known before taking an online bar exam! The first two are exam-day specific, and the second two points relate to preparation for the exam. Be sure to keep them in mind when mentally preparing yourself for exam day!
This fall, most law school classes will look different from the norm. While some schools are offering in-person instruction, many have shifted to a hybrid or online model. Access to campus libraries and other study areas may be restricted or prohibited. For law students across the country, one of the keys to a successful year will be learning how to study at home. Luckily for you, we have a few tips!
While preparing for the bar exam can be stressful at any time, preparing for an in-person bar exam during COVID-19 can take anxiety to new levels. If you feel worried about this prospect, you’re not alone. We’re here to help with some tips on how to do your best on the bar exam in the age of the coronavirus.
October 2020 New York Bar Exam results should be released around the last week of November or first week of December. (Our formal guess of the release date is Thursday, December 3, 2020, but it could really be anytime!) Note that results were released on December 16. You can read the press release here.
Of the 5,000 applicants that took the exam, 4,319 passed for an overall passing rate of 84%! This is about half the takers that normally take the exam (see below for total amounts). And the pass rate is about 20% higher, likely due to the fact that New York gave a preference toward first-time bar exam takers and others likely to pass.
UPDATE: the October 2020 New York Bar Exam results were released on December 16, 2020, 4319/5150 (83.9% passed)!
On July 16, 2020, the California Supreme Court instructed the State Bar of California to develop a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guide pertaining to the online California bar examination on October 5−6, 2020. Huge California Bar Exam Updates For October 2020: On July 16, 2020, the California Supreme Court provided long-awaited news about the fate of the California bar exam. Not only did the announcement reveal the cancelation of the September bar exam, but it also postponed the exam to October 5-6, 2020, extended the registration period for the exam, permanently reduced the passing score from 1440 to 1390, and authorized a provisional licensure program. Each of these key points will be discussed in greater detail below. Keep reading for our analysis of these California Bar Exam updates.

Washington D.C. Bar Exam results are usually released around mid-to-end of October. However, this year, the exam is being administered on October 5-6, 2020, and ONLINE only. So, we have no basis for this prediction, as this is uncharted territory! You can read more about D.C.’s bar exam changes here. Thus, it is unclear when the October 2020 Washington D.C. Bar Exam results will be released, but we have a guess!
Update: the unofficial results were released on 12/9/20, and the official results on 12/11/20.
