How To Prepare For An In-Person Bar Exam During COVID
While preparing for the bar exam can be stressful at any time, preparing for an in-person bar exam during COVID-19 can take anxiety to new levels. If you feel worried about this prospect, you’re not alone. We’re here to help with some tips on how to do your best on the bar exam in the age of the coronavirus.
How To Prepare For An In-Person Bar Exam During COVID
1. Focus on What You Can Control
For many of us, the global pandemic means that each day is filled with uncertainty. Because so many things are beyond our control, it is helpful to focus on what you can control in order to prepare for the in-person bar exam. All of our “regular” bar exam study advice still applies: create and stick to a study schedule, focus on highly tested material, memorize the law, and use real MBE practice questions.
2. Prepare for Test Day in Advance
The last thing you’ll want to do is feel rushed as you leave to take the in-person bar exam during COVID-19. Instead, gather everything you’ll need well in advance. At a bare minimum, you should bring a mask and sanitizer. Some students may feel more comfortable wearing a face shield and gloves as well. Once you know how you’ll protect yourself on test day, practice taking the exam wearing your gear. The last thing you’ll want on test day is to realize that your mask makes your ears ache after just an hour!
3. Caring for Your Mental Health is More Important Than Ever
Even during the best of times, preparing for the bar exam can take a toll on your mental health. Now more than ever, make time to care for yourself. Take a walk (wearing a mask!) as a study break. Schedule video chats with your friends and family. Treat yourself to a movie night at home. Giving your brain a bit of a break can help you feel refreshed and refocused when you begin studying again!

4. Realize You May Need to Be Flexible
We all know what they say about the best-laid plans — that goes double when preparing for the in-person bar exam during COVID-19. Around the country, in-person bar exams are being postponed or transitioned to remote administrations. It is important to regularly check with your state’s bar association for any updates or changes. While changes can be frustrating, if you’ve put in the hard work to prepare for the bar exam you’ll be able to adapt to whatever comes your way!
Preparing for the in-person bar exam during COVID-19 will be challenging. However, these tips will help you keep things in perspective and prepare you to succeed!
