Michigan Bar Exam Appeals – An Update in 2022

We have not written extensively on the topic of Michigan bar exam appeals in a while and wanted to give a quick update on the current state of Michigan bar exam appeals. This post is co-written by Ashley Heidemann and Meagan Jabbori, partners at the Heidemann Jabbori Law Firm. Note: this post does not constitute legal advice. As background on us, we have been writing appeals for the past seven years and frequently write the majority of passing appeals in the state. (This past administration, we wrote 13 appeals of the 15 that passed in the state, for example.)

If you failed the July 2020 Michigan bar exam, we are very sorry! You may not know the next best step. One option that you may have, depending on your essay score and the quality of your essays, is appealing your bar exam score. If you pass the bar exam on appeal, you will be a licensed lawyer just like anyone else who passed the bar exam.

We have been asked this question a lot this week, especially given that February 2018 Illinois bar exam results were just released.

The short answer is, unfortunately, you cannot appeal your Illinois bar exam results. The Illinois Board of Admissions released this scoring memo which states that “Bar examination results are final and non-appealable. The Board of Admissions does not entertain requests for review, regrading, or other relief.” The Board does automatically regrade all scores between a 262 and 265 prior to results being released. But once results are released, they are final. Read more

The Heidemann Law Firm is thrilled to have written 10 of the 11 bar exam appeals that passed in the State of Michigan for the July 2017 Michigan bar exam administration.  486 students passed pre-appeal and 497 passed after appeals. The passage rate for the July 2017 Michigan bar exam is 73%.

for February 2017 Bar Exam

The Michigan Board of Law Examiners’ only passed seven Michigan bar exam appeals in the State of Michigan for the February 2017 administration.

We are thrilled to have written five of those appeals. Of the passing appeals that we wrote, three clients passed needing only one point on appeal. One passed needing two points. One passed needing three points.

The February 2016 Michigan bar exam appeals were released a few weeks prior to the July 2016 Michigan bar exam. Michigan bar exam passage rate statistics by school were released shortly after that.

The bar exam comes at the end of three years of studying in law school, thousands of dollars spent in tuition, and then even more time, money, and energy spent on expensive bar review courses. It is the last step for students on their way to finally becoming lawyers.

Which States Allow Bar Exam Appeals?

Which states allow bar exam appeals?

It is not clear the number of states that truly allow bar exam appeals. Many state websites are unclear or not updated. Further, some states have changed their bar exam appeals policy after adopting the UBE or changing their bar exam. However, based on the state bar examiner’s websites, we are able to see that the following states allow bar exam appeals. (Note: This is not legal advice. Please look up your jurisdiction’s rules in-depth if you are considering a bar exam appeal. Further, if your state is not listed below but they offer a post-results appeals process of some kind, please let us know in the comments below!)

Update on July 2015 Michigan Bar Exam Appeals

For the July 2015 administration, ten people passed on appeal and we wrote five of the appeals.

How do we know that ten people passed on appeal? Because the pre-appeals pass number released by the Michigan Board of Law Examiners was 493. The post-appeals pass statistics released by the Michigan Board of Law Examiners say that 503 applicants passed on appeals.*
