Should I Take MEE Subjects In Law School To Pass The Bar?
Should I Take MEE Subjects In Law School To Pass The Bar?
The UBE includes three parts: MBE, MEE, and MPT. The MBE subjects are usually part of the required courses in law school and include the following subjects: (1) civil procedure, (2) constitutional law, (3) contracts & sales, (4) criminal law & procedure, (5) evidence, (6) property, and (7) torts. The MEE, however, tests on all the above-mentioned subjects as well as subjects that you might not have been exposed to while in law school. Many students wonder if they need to take all the MEE subjects in law school in order to pass the bar even if they have absolutely no interest in the subject matter. Below, we discuss whether you should take MEE subjects in order to pass the bar exam.
Should I Take MEE Subjects In Law School To Pass The Bar?
The short answer is no.
Do you need to take the MEE subject courses in law school? The short answer is no. You can take and pass the bar exam without taking elective courses that might be found on the MEE. Many examinees still obtain a high score on a Family Law (or Business Associations, or Conflicts of Law, etc.) MEE question by relying only on their bar prep. That being said, if your law school does not require you to take an MBE subject, it may be worth considering taking one of those classes. For example, there’s a lot of material to learn about evidence when prepping for the bar exam.
We certainly recommend keeping an eye on the bar exam throughout your time in law school. However, don’t forget that you have an entire legal career to focus on as well! While preparing for the bar exam is certainly important, it is also beneficial to take elective courses that will best set you up for the years of practicing law ahead of you. If you want to practice tax law, feel free to take that tax law course in place of Family Law! You can still pass the bar!
How will I learn MEE subjects for the bar?
How can you be sure to have a competent understanding of the MEE subjects if you never took those classes in law school? Take a bar exam prep course! There’s no getting around it– studying for the bar is hard work. A bar exam prep course will not only make the process of studying for the bar easier, but you can be confident you are learning all the material necessary to score well on the bar exam. While you do not need to take a secured transactions class in law school in order to pass the bar exam, you still need to spend time studying secured transactions prior to the bar exam. Invest the time, effort, and yes, money, into your bar prep, and you will be able to pass the bar despite not having taken one or all of the MEE “elective” courses.
You do not need to take the MEE subject courses in law school to pass the bar. Should you? Maybe! The answer to this question should depend on your interests and aspirations after law school. Take the law school courses that will benefit you for years of practicing law, and take the bar exam course that will compensate for the others!
