How To Study When You Run Out Of Real MBE Questions
How To Study When You Run Out Of Real MBE Questions
The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) has released approximately 1,800 real MBE questions. You may find yourself in a position where you have completed all the released questions, either because you have done lots of practice, or because you are a repeat bar exam taker and previously completed all of the available questions as you prepared for a previous administration of the bar exam. In this post, we will discuss how to study after you run out of real MBE questions!
How To Study When You Run Out Of Real MBE Questions
1. Go through the real questions again.
If you were unsuccessful on the bar exam even after completing all of the real MBE questions, and are wondering which questions you should use for practice as you study for the next bar exam, the first thing you can do is use the same released questions again. Even if some of them sound familiar to you, try to answer them slowly and methodically (check out this post on how to answer MBE Questions slowly and methodically!) and make sure you are focusing on the rule of law being tested, not just on the fact pattern.
Even if you already did the question and the facts are somewhat familiar to you, doing the questions again will allow you to double-check that you actually know the law being tested. It will also refresh your memory on the nuances and the way in which the NCBE tests certain areas of the law.
Importantly, make sure you take the time to understand why you are getting the questions correct or incorrect. If you miss a question, spend some time reading the answer explanation, going back to your outline, and even searching for an explanation of the topic online until you fully understand the rule being tested.
2. Re-do the questions you missed.
If you run out of real MBE questions and there are still several weeks until the bar exam, you can go back through the questions that you previously missed and answer them again!
Try answering the questions that you got incorrect again. At the very least, go back through the answer choices and make sure you understand why you missed the questions you got incorrect. If you have been studying efficiently, you should have learned the areas that you got incorrect and should be able to improve your performance!
If you find yourself getting the same questions wrong again, rather than continuing to do more questions, go back to the outlines and spend some time trying to understand the laws being tested! You may even want to consider enlisting the help of a tutor to help you figure out those really tricky areas of the law!
3. Try the questions in a different format.
If you previously used an app or online format to complete the practice questions, try taking them in paper form. Changing the format of the questions decreases the chance that you will remember the exact question and will make utilization of the repeat questions more effective!
4. Don’t waste your money buying “more” real questions!
There are only 1,800 released questions! If you have gone through all of the questions that JD Advising sells and plan to buy “more” questions by investing in, for instance, Adaptibar, know that Adaptibar is using the exact same released questions that you already completed through JD Advising! Rather than spending money on those questions, simply go through the same questions again, as suggested above!
5. Study your outlines!
No matter how many practice questions you complete, chances are you will not see a practice question on every single point of law that could possibly be tested on the bar exam. You have a much higher chance of covering more material if you continue to study your outlines! Spending time memorizing your outlines is always a good investment as it will allow you to more easily answer the MBE questions, and will likely also prove to be beneficial on the written portion of the exam!
Success on the bar exam has more to do with quality than quantity. Answering thousands of questions does not necessarily guarantee success. So, rather than trying to answer more questions, focus your studying on going back and learning the law that you missed on the questions you have already completed!
