How to Restart Studying for the California Bar Exam
If you do not know how to restart studying for the California Bar Exam, you are not alone! When you begin to study again, you don’t have to dive into your books and start studying right away. Take a step back, look at the bigger picture, do some planning, and then begin. In this post, we discuss how best to restart studying for the California Bar Exam!
How to Restart Studying for the California Bar Exam
Pick a Different Location
It’s important that you change things up a little when you begin to study again to feel reinvigorated with the process. At times, studying for the exam in the same room and at the same desk you last studied at can feel discouraging or even draining because it may feel like you never stopped studying (rather than beginning again refreshed). A change of scenery is one key way to improve your productivity. It will increase alertness and focus. So, switch up where you are studying to create better learning.
Additionally, keep in mind that finding a comfortable spot to study is not always conducive to productivity. Find a chair and table where you can maintain an upright position, rather than slouching back into a couch. Consider studying in a place without distractions such as your phone, the tv, or easy access to the refrigerator. If you were studying at home the last time around, change it up. Restart studying for the California bar exam from the library, a vacant office, or at a park.
Interpret your Scores
Before you dive into reviewing the black letter law, take some time to review your score report. Understanding and interpreting your scores is a necessary step towards addressing the problems that stood in your way last time and paving the way to success on the bar exam. You should use them to guide your study plan moving forward. Check out our post on How to Interpret My California Bar Score Letter for more details.
Create a Calendar
Have a study plan and create a calendar. This calendar should look very different from your last study calendar. You now know your weaknesses based on your score report. So, this calendar should reflect more time and work on the areas that you need more practice. in For example, if your MBE score was low, change your schedule and spend more time practicing MBE questions, and vice versa i.e. essays. The same goes for specific essay topics. If you performed poorly on Contracts last time, allocate more time to study Contracts this time. Refer to How to Make a Bar Exam Study Schedule for guidance.
Once you have created your schedule, stick to it! Treat the items on your calendar like the required duties of a job. Wake up at your scheduled time every day, and stop studying at the scheduled time every day. Take your lunch break, and rest breaks as necessary. Take personal time to decompress – this is usually one night of out the week to dedicate to yourself and relax.
Now that you have set up your new study location, analyzed your scores, and created a tailored calendar. You are ready to restart studying for the California Bar Exam!
