How to Get Motivated as a Repeat Bar Exam Taker
How to Get Motivated as a Repeat Bar Exam Taker
The most common reason repeat bar exam takers have trouble getting motivated is because they feel like they are going to do the same thing again and that their result will not change. And they cannot imagine going through the whole study process again – and the feeling of failing the bar exam again! But, this time will be different! Here are a few ways to get motivated as a repeat bar exam taker.
How to Get Motivated as a Repeat Bar Exam Taker
Remind yourself that you are not starting from scratch!
You already know a lot from studying before – including how the bar exam experience will be! You are actually at an advantage in this way. You will not have to relearn everything — even if you forgot some of the information you learned before, it will come back quickly.
Start with a clean slate.
If possible, get new study supplies (i.e., pens, pencils, etc.). Study in a new place. Or get a new course or tutor. This will help you avoid feeling like you are in a rut.
Don’t let history repeat itself.
Analyze what went wrong last time and come up with a new study routine. You may change when, where, or how you study. It is important to dissect your score report and come up with a new approach. If you do the same thing you did last time, you can expect the same result! (We have a free guide on what to do if you failed the bar exam here!)
Find a support system.
For example, a tutor, a study buddy, a law school faculty member, etc. Having someone to go through the experience with you this time can be very positive, especially if you are feeling alone and isolated.
Stay healthy.
Make relieving stress and keeping yourself mentally healthy a priority – e.g., exercise, meditate, consult a therapist, etc. We list plenty of ways to stay healthy while studying for the bar exam here!
Be positive!
Remind yourself that repeat bar exam takers pass every administration. You can do it! We have had students pass who have:
- taken the bar exam over 10 times
- needed to increase their score over 70+ points
- not attended law school
If you are invested in your success, you can pass the bar exam!
