Have You Failed the MPRE Three Times? (Or Four Times, Or Five Times)…
Have You Failed the MPRE Three Times? (Or Four Times, Or Five Times)…
The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) is tougher than it may seem at first glance. Many students have to take the MPRE not once, but twice, three times, or more! So if you find you have failed the MPRE three times, you are definitely not alone! The good news is, to our knowledge anyway, it is not on your record and we have never heard of an employer asking if you failed the MPRE! So, while it may be a hassle, and while those application fees can be expensive, and while you may hate wasting more than one Saturday morning on it, at least it is not going to leave any kind of blemish on your record. In this post, we tell you how to move past the MPRE and pass it the next time you take it! (You may also want to check out this post about why failing the MPRE can be a good thing!)
Have You Failed the MPRE Three Times? (Or Four Times, Or Five Times)…
If you have failed the MPRE three times (or more than once!), what you don’t want to do is do the exact same thing you did before over and over again. Instead, you want to change your approach to the MPRE.
Here are our tips to change your approach:
1. Start early.
Like at least a month early. The MPRE is not something that you will master in a day and as you have found out, it is harder than its reputation sometimes suggests. So don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you don’t need to study or that the MPRE is not hard. The amount of people that fail it and retake it suggests otherwise! (Also, it surprises a lot of people to hear this, but we have many students that have passed the bar exam on their first try but cannot pass the MPRE! The MPRE is tricky in its own way!)
2. Change the questions you are using.
The best questions are the questions from the NCBE itself. The ncbex.org website offers a 60-question exam of actual released questions. You can also buy the released questions directly from us for a cheaper price.
It is not to say that these are the only questions you should use as you may want to practice more. But these are the best questions, and it is wise to go through them carefully.
3. Change the approach you are taking.
Don’t study the same outline and use the same course. Try something different. For example, check out our free MPRE Course! It is rated five stars by our students and is taught by our star MPRE tutor. It comes with a free outline, free questions, and free expert instruction!
4. Make your own outline.
We have a wonderful MPRE “cheat sheet” here which will help guide your studying. However, we strongly encourage students to make their own outlines and charts focusing on what they struggle with.
Many students say that this makes the difference between passing and failing for them — as it forces them to actively review and understand the rules. It is especially helpful if you are now taking the MPRE for, say, the fourth time, as if you just re-read the same outline you’ve been using, you will find yourself bored and unable to retain anything. However, if you make your own MPRE outline, you will find yourself much more engaged.
5. Consider tutoring.
We have a 100% passage rate among our private students. Not every student needs private tutoring, but sometimes a few one-on-one private tutoring sessions plus a stellar MPRE outline is truly the key to getting the MPRE behind you!
We have helped several MPRE takers pass on their second, third, fourth, fifth+ try. So do not be discouraged if you failed the MPRE three times! Read more about our MPRE tutoring options here.
