What To Do The Day Before Bar Exam Results Are Released
For many soon-to-be attorneys, waiting for bar exam results might be as agonizing as taking the actual exam! In a world of instant gratification, bar exam results are released at a snail’s pace. Generally, results take at least a couple of months to be released, and sometimes longer, depending on the jurisdiction where you took the bar exam. That’s a long time to ponder about whether you passed a test that determines your eligibility to practice law. No matter how many times you’ve told yourself that you’ve made peace with your results, somehow, you’re still nervous. That’s totally normal! When it comes to the bar exam, nobody is immune from emotions. That’s why JD Advising has assembled some extra tips for what to do the day before bar exam results are released.
What To Do The Day Before Bar Exam Results Are Released
Acknowledge/Accept Your Emotions
Your anxiety, stress, and eagerness are normal reactions in the face of the momentous event of receiving your bar exam score. What many students fail to realize is that these emotions are not an indicator of performance on the bar exam. A thought and/or emotion has no impact on the reality ultimately facing you. For example, if you have a bad thought, does that make you bad? Of course not! If you feel great about something, does that make you a great person? Nope! Thoughts and emotions are simply your body’s way of processing external stimuli. They do not define who you are or alter the reality around you. Try not to let your emotions trick you into believing you passed or failed the bar exam.
Spend Time With Those Closest To You
We’ve mentioned many times before that a good support system is an asset when preparing for the bar exam. From start to finish, your family, friends, and/or significant other are all great sources of support. That is especially true as you wait for bar exam results to be released. Spend the day before results are released with those that support you through the good times and the bad. This is a great way to take your mind off the bar exam for a while. It’s also an excellent way to surround yourself with people who care for you regardless of whether you pass or fail. So, take some time and enjoy a fun outing, relax and watch Netflix, or go out for dinner.
Avoid Social Media
Reddit, law blogs, and other social media outlets can be downright toxic the closer you get to bar exam results being released. One quick look on social media, and you’ll understand what we’re talking about. People use websites like Reddit to vent their anxieties, speculate, and some come up with some downright whacky theories. Likewise, a friend from law school might post a link regarding bar exam results that sparks some chatter on your newsfeed making your second guess your performance on the bar exam. All of this can be entertaining, but it can also ramp up anxiety levels, especially if you read too heavily into things. While you might feel like nobody else understands how you’re feeling – trust us, there are plenty of similarly situated applicants. Pro tip: Try and avoid social media in the immediate time period leading up to the release of bar exam results.
