What NOT to do if you failed the Uniform Bar Exam
We have tons of advice on what to do if you failed the Uniform Bar Exam. (For example, see this free guide on what to do if you failed the Uniform Bar Exam!) In this post, however, we tell you what not to do if you failed the Uniform Bar Exam. These are common mistakes that examinees make after receiving failing results. By being aware of them, hopefully you can avoid making them!
What NOT to do if you failed the Uniform Bar Exam
Don’t study the day you find out you failed.
If you are eager to get past the bar exam, good for you! Your enthusiasm and your dedication will pay off. But we recommend that you take some time after finding you failed the Uniform Bar Exam to let it sink in and to come up with a game plan moving forward. This way, you can study with a purpose and a well-thought-out plan.
On the other hand, don’t procrastinate.
It is very tempting to put off studying or coming up with a game plan until later. After all, nobody looks forward to studying for the bar exam again. But “later” often ends up being next month…or the month after. Some students find that by the time they buckle down, they only have six weeks left to study. Unfortunately, many of these students end up failing the Uniform Bar Exam again simply because they don’t put in enough time. When you get your results, plan a day a week or so out to come up with a game plan for the next bar exam—including figuring out when you will start studying.
Don’t ignore any deep feelings of sadness or depression.
One thing that is more important than the bar exam is your mental health. It is normal to feel sad, angry, jealous, disappointed, and a combination of other feelings when you fail the bar exam. However, if these feelings linger or if you cannot shake a feeling of sadness, depression, or hopelessness, please seek professional help. A professional can point you in the right direction—whether that be therapy, medication, or even incorporating something like meditation into your routine.
As an added bonus, you are more likely to be able to study productively and pass the bar exam if you are not feeling anxious or depressed.
Don’t ignore the information you have at your disposal.
Virtually no one who fails the bar exam looks forward to receiving their score report or reviewing their essay or MPT answers. However, one of the advantages you have going into the next bar exam is that you have a lot of valuable information at your disposal!
Some states provide a very detailed breakdown of MBE, MEE, and MPT scores. Others allow you to pay a small fee to request your essay and MPT answers. Take advantage of whatever your state provides! This information is invaluable and can be critical in helping you come up with a game plan to pass the next bar exam!
Don’t do the same thing twice.
If you failed the Uniform Bar Exam, you may be tempted to simply repeat your course or redo your entire study routine. However, we do not recommend this! If you do the exact same thing twice, you are likely to get the same result. If you want a different result, try something different!
