What Are The UBE Tested Subjects?
What Are The UBE Tested Subjects?
The Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) includes three sections. The first is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), which is comprised of multiple-choice questions. The second is the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE), which includes six essay questions. Finally, the third is the Multistate Performance Test (MPT), which contains two legal tasks. Below, we cover the subjects that could appear on each section of the UBE!
What Are The UBE Tested Subjects?
The MBE Portion
The MBE portion of the UBE tests the following subjects: (1) Contracts and Sales; (2) Constitutional Law; (3) Criminal Law and Procedure (4) Civil Procedure; (5) Evidence; (6) Real Property; and (7) Torts.
The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) usually dedicates 25 multiple-choice questions per subject on the MBE portion of the exam. That’s 175 total scored questions. Wait, didn’t we say there are 200 questions on the MBE? That we did! The missing 25 questions from our calculations are on the exam, however, they’re experimental questions. That means these questions do not factor into your MBE score and do not count in determining whether you pass the bar exam. The NCBE includes experimental questions to determine which questions might do well on future exams.
The MEE Portion
The MEE portion tests the following subjects: (1) Business Associations; (2) Civil Procedure; (3) Conflict of Laws; (4) Constitutional Law; (5) Contracts; (6) Criminal Law and Procedure; (7) Evidence; (8) Family Law; (9) Real Property; (10) Torts; (11) Trusts and Estates, and (12) Secured Transactions.
Remember that each UBE exam only contains six of these subjects. That means you need to study and review each subject because you will not know which of the above-referenced subjects will appear on the MEE. Trust us, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the bar exam!
Unlike the MBE portion of the bar exam, which generally breaks down each subject into 25 questions, the MEE is randomized. You simply do not know what you are going to get with 100% certainty. However, some subjects appear more frequently than others. Be sure to check out our frequency chart for more information on what subjects show up more frequently than others!
The MPT Portion
Unlike the MBE and MEE, the MPT doesn’t focus on testing certain subjects. Instead, the MPT focuses on putting applicants in simulated situations commonly found in the legal world. For example, you may be asked to draft a persuasive brief, client letter, memorandum, or complaint. The good news is that your direct knowledge of black letter law will not be tested. The MPT portion of the bar exam provides the factual and legal material to be used in your work product. For more information be sure to check out our prior post on how to conquer the MPT!
