Subjects Always Tested on the Michigan Bar Exam
Subjects Always Tested on the Michigan Bar Exam
Subjects Always Tested on the Michigan Bar Exam: Below, we categorize which subjects the Michigan Board of Law Examiners consistently, frequently, and not commonly test on the Michigan Bar Exam. This analysis is based on reviewing bar exam subjects and topics from previous years.
Subjects Always Tested on the Michigan Bar Exam
The subjects consistently tested on the essay portion of the Michigan bar exam include:
- Constitutional Law
- Criminal Law
- Criminal Procedure
- Contracts
- Civil Procedure
- Evidence
- Real Property
- Domestic Relations
- Personal Property
- Professional Responsibility
- Wills or Trusts. (You will almost certainly see a Wills or Trusts question; however, the Board will test either one or the other, but not both in the same exam.)
Subjects frequently (but not always) tested on the Michigan Bar Exam:
- Secured Transactions (If they do not test Sales, they usually test Secured Transactions)
- No-Fault (If the Board does not test Torts, they will usually test No-Fault Insurance in its place.)
- Workers’ Compensation
Subjects not commonly tested on the Michigan Bar Exam:
- Equity
- Conflicts of Law
- Partnership
- Agency
- Commercial Paper/Negotiable Instruments
*Note: This is not a prediction of what is coming up on any upcoming bar exam. It is also not wise to neglect any subjects. “Lesser-tested” subjects, including Equity, Conflict of Laws, and Agency, can and have been tested! Also, even if a subject is “always” tested on the Michigan Bar Exam, the Michigan Board of Law Examiners’ has the ability to do whatever it wants.
If you are interested in seeing this all in chart form, see our Michigan Bar Exam essay frequency chart here.
Lastly, in addition to focusing on the subjects, we also recommend you focus on the highly-tested topics within a subject. The July 2016 exam tested the same Equity topic as the July 2011 exam. Similarly, the July 2016 exam tested the same No-Fault topic as the July 2014, February 2011, etc., exams.
You can also learn the highly tested areas by carefully perusing past essays or by buying our book on How to Pass the Michigan Bar Exam (which you can purchase below or read more about by clicking the link!): Please read the terms of use prior to purchasing it.
We hope this post on subjects always tested on the Michigan bar exam was helpful!
