Pros

1. A higher score can help you get into a better school.

Many law schools understand that students can have bad test days. Maybe you were unduly stressed about the test. Maybe you did not get as much prep time as you needed. Regardless of the reason, retaking the LSAT is an option, both to improve your chances of getting into a better one. Schools no longer have to average your LSAT scores when reporting them to the ABA. Admissions officers we’ve spoken with confirmed that they often like candidates who retake the LSAT and score much higher. It shows they can buckle down and perform under pressure. So, if you think a few extra months of studying can raise your score, give it another shot.

2. A higher score could also mean more financial aid/scholarship money.

Even if you still have the same target school, scoring better on another LSAT might open you up to more financial aid and scholarship money.

Cons

1. You could delay the start of law school.

If you retake the LSAT in September, you will not be able to enroll in the fall, meaning you will have a gap year. If your plans involve going to law school in the fall, and you don’t score well on the June LSAT, you might end up with a gap year.

2. You might not actually score better, leaving you in the same position.

LSAC acknowledges the fact that even with additional preparation, students might not score better on the test the second time around. If you don’t change your approach, and deal with underlying issues for your poor performance, you might end up in the same boat in a few months’ time.

Overall, the choice is up to you. There is some definite risk in retaking the LSAT. However, the rewards could be a better law school and more financial assistance. Think carefully about your future plans, and the likelihood of a different result, before you decide to sit for the LSAT again!
