Can You Raise Your LSAT Score After Multiple Attempts?
Can You Raise Your LSAT Score After Multiple Attempts?
If you’ve sat for the LSAT multiple times, and have not seen much change in your score, you might think it’s impossible to increase it, no matter how much you study. However, this is not true! We’ve had students increase their scores by 5-10 points on their third or fourth attempt at the LSAT. So, what’s the best way to raise your LSAT score if you feel like you’ve tried everything?
Can You Raise Your LSAT Score After Multiple Attempts?
1. Try a different study approach!
If you are trying to raise your LSAT score, you need to try a different approach. The most common mistake we see students make is to try the same thing again and again and again. If you do not get the results you are looking for, it’s foolish to keep attempting the same thing! So, unless you truly did not put enough time in during your preparation, you need to change something about how you study to see different results.
Now, this can manifest in a variety of ways. You can try a different prep approach. Often, students who come to us for tutoring simply need a different explanation for parts of the test they struggle with. It could even be as simple as a different book for Logic Games, or a different way of explaining a Logical Reasoning approach. Whatever you do, if you want to raise your LSAT score, do not try the same thing that delivered inadequate results previously!
2. Analyze your incorrect answers, and figured out why you got them wrong.
We cannot stress enough how important this step is. Taking endless prep questions and scoring them afterward does you no good unless you analyze your answers. Students often come to us claiming they’ve taken 5-10 PrepTests and still are not seeing results. When we probe a little deeper, it turns out, more often than not, that they aren’t reviewing their answers, but just getting their raw score and moving on to more studying.
As you can probably see, this is a bad approach to LSAT review. If you want to raise your LSAT score, it is much more beneficial to focus on your incorrect answers. It’s impossible to increase your score if you don’t focus on the areas you are weakest in. So, make sure to analyze the questions you get wrong, and then focus on those when you study. If, for example, you can easily answer linear games, but struggle with grouping, you’re wasting precious time if you practice linear games and neglect grouping ones.
3. Use your previous score reports to see if something other than the material hurt you on test day.
Timing on the LSAT is equally as important as the material. If you struggle finishing on time, it’s really hard to score well on the exam. People who struggle with timing typically don’t get to the end of sections, dropping unnecessary points. So, if you notice you didn’t answer the last few questions in a section at all, or generally get them wrong, timing could be your issue. Simply practicing with a timer moving forward could really help you resolve these issues.
Another thing your score report can tell you is if you suffer from fatigue. If you are strong out of the gate, but see noticeable dips in your score on later sections, you most likely haven’t conditioned yourself properly for the test. The LSAT is grueling, and many students, in hindsight, are surprised at questions they answer incorrectly in later sections. If you really struggled with focusing on test day, work on your conditioning by taking full, timed LSATs before you sit for the test again.
4. Give yourself enough time to prepare.
If you use any (or all) of the techniques above to try to raise your LSAT score, remember that change takes time. You need to give yourself time to implement changes and work them into your routine. Maybe sitting for the next LSAT isn’t the best thing for you. Instead, be realistic with yourself. If taking the test again in 2 months doesn’t seem feasible, considering waiting for the next one. Yes, it might delay your admission to law school. However, it’s better to be more prepared later than to rush and fall into the same trap again!
