Multiple Bar Exam Attempts: How Many Are Too Many?
The bar exam is the culmination of three years of law school, significant financial expense, and hours of studying and hard work. We realize that many individuals can’t put their lives on hold indefinitely to keep re-taking the bar exam. The question of “when should I stop trying to pass the bar exam?” therefore, has no one size fits all answer. Everybody’s circumstances are different, which means everybody’s considerations when taking the bar exam are different. Sometimes life has other plans for us, but don’t worry, the bar exam isn’t going anywhere. You can take it as many times as you want, whenever you want, and for whatever reason you choose.
Repeat Test-Takers Do Pass!
If that doesn’t comfort you enough, hear the names Evelyn Uba and Sam Goldstein. Perhaps you’ve already heard of them since both have gained recognition in the legal community. No, these individuals weren’t considered recently for the Supreme Court, and they didn’t found famous law firms. Instead, these two amazing individuals are known for how many times they had to take the bar exam before passing.
Evelyn Uba is a mother of four children and a Nigerian immigrant who migrated to the United States in 1983. Uba started studying at California Southern Law School in 2005 and continued studying while she and her husband raised four children. After graduating from law school, Evelyn started a journey that revolved around taking and passing the bar exam. While caring for her children and squeezing in time to study late at night after work, Evelyn Uba took the bar exam over ten times. On January 8, 2021, Evelyn Uba passed the California Bar Exam.
Sam Goldstein shares a similar experience. Sam graduated from Arizona Summit Law School in 2013. Since then, Sam has taken the bar exam over eight times, hasn’t passed, and has no intention of giving up. Since taking his first administration of the bar exam, Sam improved his score and inches closer to passing. In February of 2018, Sam came only 27 points away from passing the Illinois Bar Exam. On the July 2018 administration, Sam came only 13 points away from passing.
Let these two awesome individuals serve as living proof – there really isn’t a one size fits all answer to the question of “how many times is too many times to take the bar exam?” Take the bar exam as many times as you want!
