How To Deal With Your Bar Exam Anxiety
It’s Only A Test
Many students ruminate about the bar exam and about what life will be like if they don’t pass. We’re want to emphasize that life goes on; you study and prepare for the next administration, take the bar exam again, and pass. Many times, students feel as though everything around them will crumble if they don’t pass the bar exam. At the end of the day, the bar exam is only a test. Nothing more and nothing less. You can take it as many times as you please, so don’t feel like all hope is lost. While it may seem like it, your life doesn’t hinge on whether you pass or fail the Bar Exam.
Walk It Off
Studying and preparing for the bar exam, while certainly mentally draining, is not the most physical of activities. Hours and hours with your head in a book or your eyes locked on a computer screen. Outlines upon outlines. MBE questions upon MBE questions. You get the idea. Preparing for the bar exam isn’t exactly the Olympics. With your body spending so much time in a sedentary position, it’s a good idea to work off some of that nervous energy. You’ll be surprised how great you feel afterward! Take some time and go to the gym, walk around campus, train for that 5K, or hit the driving range.
Reach Out For Help
Friends, family, professors, law school faculty, your therapist – they’re all there to provide you with support. Don’t be afraid to reach out and take some time to talk or vent! Preparing for the bar exam is stressful, to say the least, and sometimes you just need someone to hear you out. Talking, crying, shouting – do whatever you need to do to get some of those heavy emotions off your chest. Many times, the act of telling someone how you’re feeling makes a world of difference. In addition, it can also give you some much-needed perspective.
Have Something To Look Forward To
Are you going somewhere for a vacation after you take the Bar Exam? Are you planning to lock yourself in your room and spend all day binging Netflix? Maybe you have a shopping spree planned as a reward for yourself? Make sure you have something fun planned to celebrate the end of the bar exam process. Not only will this give you something to look forward to while studying, but it can also calm your nerves. Regardless of whether you pass or fail the bar exam, one thing is certain. You put in hours and hours of work studying and preparing, which is something that deserves to be celebrated. Keep working towards passing the bar exam, but also take time to daydream about that beach in Greece or that local museum you’ve always been meaning to visit.
LOL
Don’t forget to find something that keeps you smiling throughout your bar exam preparations! Surround yourself with energy that makes you laugh! Find something to laugh about during your bar prep course, and spend time with friends who make you smile. Heck, laugh with friends walking into the bar exam, during the lunch break, and most importantly – after the exam. Not only does laughing make you feel great, but laughing can also reduce stress and soothe tension. When it comes to studying for the bar exam, laughter just might be the best medicine!
