How to Format a Memo on the MPT
How to Format a Memo on the MPT: In this post we discuss how to format a memo on the MPT. When you hear the word “memo”, what is really being referred to is an objective memorandum. The goal of an objective memorandum is to be objective when discussing the issues. You should still arrive at conclusions. But make sure you are not acting as an advocate. Often, the memo will be written to a senior partner at the firm and he or she will ask for your advice on specific issues. In this post, we show you how to format a memo on the MPT.

Introduction:
When you are writing your MPT memo, your introduction will generally just be a short summary of what you are asked to discuss – e.g. “You have asked me to analyze the following claims….”. Then summarize the task in maybe 3-5 sentences. Do not include a statement of facts unless the memo asks you to.
Discussion:
Heading 1: Each issue should have a heading that applies the law to the facts and states a conclusion.
Use the directions on the task memo so that you know which issues to focus on. After each heading, explain the law and the salient facts.
Heading 2: Use another heading for the next issue. Remember to state the law, apply it and conclude. Strong headings are critical when you format a memo on the MPT! Repeat for all issues.
Then again, explain the law and salient facts. Do not worry if each issue is not treated identically. Sometimes there will just be a couple main issues. Other times, there will be more issues but not all will be of equal importance.
Conclusion
Lastly, summarize your conclusion in three or four sentences. Make sure it is consistent with your headings! If you find yourself running out of time, skip out on some of the analysis above and make sure to write your conclusion. That will make your answer look complete – which is one of the things you will be scored on.
