Where Can I Find Free MPT Practice Tests?
Where Can I Find Free MPT Practice Tests?
Are you studying for the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) and having trouble finding free MPT practice tests? Below will discuss some of the best resources for MPT practice tests.
Where Can I find free MPT Practice Tests?
In Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) jurisdictions, the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) portion comprises twenty percent (20%) of the exam. Non-UBE jurisdictions that administer the MPT set their own policies to determine the weight of the MPT in relation to the overall score. Generally, it ranges anywhere between ten percent (10%) and twenty percent (20%) of the overall score. Currently, 40 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau and Virgin Islands, also administer the MPT as part of their bar exam.
Furthermore, California recently switched from the 3-hour California Performance Test to a 90-minute California Performance Test (CPT). The California Bar Examiners write their own performance tests. They do not use the ones written by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. Similarly, Pennsylvania also administers its own performance tests.
The MPT constitutes a significant portion of the overall score in UBE jurisdictions. Therefore, we find the best way to receive a passing score is by doing and carefully reviewing previous MPT practice tests.
Where can I find free MPT practice tests?
1. NCBE Website
You can find free MPT practice tests from July 2007 through February 2012 if you go to the “Study Aids” section of the NCBE website. For each examination, you can access the file, library, and MPT point sheets. After you write out a practice MPT, use the point sheets to figure out whether you addressed enough of the relevant facts and law. However, do not become overwhelmed if you did not include every single sentence of the point sheets in your answer. These are not representative of what an examinee can write in 90 minutes. They can help you learn how to pair up facts from the file with the law in the library. This is a necessary skill that you can hone with practice.
You can also purchase MPT practice tests through the present date from the NCBE website.
2. State Bar Websites
The Georgia Office of Bar Admissions has past MPT questions and high-scoring student answers available on their website. The NCBE’s MPT point sheets are not included. However, for every MPT question, you can find one to three high-scoring student answers. We highly recommend reviewing the student answers so you can become more comfortable with formatting and organization. In addition, you can gain an understanding of which rules of law you should have extracted from the library and which facts from the file you should have included in your answer. These answers are a realistic representation of what an examinee can complete within the allotted time.
Looking for additional high scoring student answers? Visit the websites of the following state bars: New York, Maryland, Minnesota, and Texas.
If you are sitting for the Pennsylvania Bar Exam, please see the Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners’ website for past performance tests and answers.
If you are taking the California bar exam, then please visit the State Bar of California’s website for past performance tests and selected answers. Keep in mind, however, that all of the performance tests through February 2017 are in the old 3-hour format. These are no longer the best resource to study for the new 90-minute performance test. However, the performance test and selected answers from July 2017 (in the new format) should be made available on the same page. The State Bar of California has also released a sample 90-minute performance test and this is a useful study tool.
