Bar Exam Gifts: Pre & Post Bar Exam Options
After spending three grueling years in law school, students are expected to spend almost three months studying non-stop for the bar exam. If you’ve ever been around someone studying for the bar exam, you can agree that it is a draining process. This is why it’s really nice when people purchase “bar exam gifts” to students taking the bar exam! The bar exam gifts below come in two categories: pre-bar exam gifts and post-bar exam gifts! Pre-bar exam gifts are nice to have on hand while students study for the bar exam. These gifts include (and you’ll see them below) gift cards, massages and prep kits! Post-bar exam gifts focus on passing the bar exam, and include sentimental gifts and vacations!
Pre-Bar Exam Gifts
1. Gift Cards
We all know that bar exam takers don’t have a lot of time on their hands, especially since they spend the majority of their day studying for the exam. As a result, restaurant gift cards come in handy when students don’t feel like spending time preparing a meal. Gift cards allow them the opportunity to get food without feeling guilty that they’re spending money (at a time that they aren’t working). If you’re not sure which restaurant to pick, purchase a Visa or Mastercard gift card.
2. Spa Package
Bar exam takers don’t have a lot of time. So, it’s important that the spa package allow them the ability to schedule it when they can take advantage of it. But what better way to say good luck on the exam than purchasing a spa package for a bar exam taker to relax and spend a couple of hours not thinking about the bar exam? Of course, we understand that this isn’t the perfect bar exam gift for all takers – in fact, some students would hate to receive this gift if it required them to use it by a certain time! This is why it is important to allow the bar exam taker to schedule this at a time they feel most comfortable – and that might be after the bar exam!
3. Bar Exam Prep Kit
If you’d like to compile a basket of “must-have” items for a bar exam taker, we recommend the following items: pens, pencils, highlighters, Post-Its, ear plugs, Advil, Pepto-Bismol, their favorite snacks and drinks, mints, chapstick, and a travel pack of tissues. You should modify this to include anything else that the student prefers! If you know their favorite snack/drink, then include it in the kit!
If you want to buy them something to prepare, you should also check out our highly regarded MBE one-sheets or MBE Guide. These will help students in every single state (besides Lousiana and Puerto Rico). If you think the student will appreciate something like private tutoring or a seminar, that would be going above and beyond! You can contact them or contact us to see what might be the best fit for the student.
Post-Bar Exam Gifts
1. Personalized Portfolio, Business Card Case or Briefcase
For students who have completed the bar exam, and are on their way to practice, a nice portfolio, a business card case or a briefcase are always appreciated. These are staples in their practice, and you can be assured they’ll get a lot of use out of them. You can even personalize it with their information!
2. Vacation
If you’re feeling extremely generous, a relaxing post bar exam vacation is the ultimate gift! Some students who take the bar exam plan a trip after the bar exam so that they have something to look forward to, and so they can relax after spending three months studying non-stop. If you want to go over and beyond, a quick trip a few days after the bar exam is the perfect way to celebrate being done with the bar exam!
3. Cash
Since the average student loan debts for young attorneys ranges anywhere from $24,000-$170,000, bar exam takers will always appreciate extra cash. Whether that money will go towards their next loan payment or a nice dinner, the gift of cash is always very much appreciated. Giving cash is a good bar exam gift if you’re not sure what the student will prefer as it allows them to decide how to best spend the money!
