Advantages and Disadvantages of an Online Bar Exam Tutor
Advantages and Disadvantages of an Online Bar Exam Tutor
If you are considering hiring a bar exam tutor, you may consider whether you should hire an online bar exam tutor or an in-person bar exam tutor. Online bar exam tutoring has been very popular since 2020, and many students continue to meet tutors online even if they once preferred in-person tutoring sessions. However, every person is different, and some greatly benefit from the flexibility that comes with meeting online. Others are better served by meeting a tutor in person. Here, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of hiring an online bar exam tutor.
Advantages of Hiring an Online Bar Exam Tutor
It will save you travel time and time getting ready.
One of the best things about hiring an online bar exam tutor is that it is convenient! You do not have to get ready. You do not have to waste time commuting back and forth. And you don’t have to worry about traffic, gas in your car, or anything like that. Time is a huge asset during bar prep so many students prefer to meet online for this reason.
You have access to more tutor options.
There are not that many stellar bar exam tutors available! If you want to meet a tutor that lives in a different state — perhaps because of their score, their experience, or their tutoring approach — then an online bar exam tutor will be a great option for you.
You can meet from the comfort of your own home (or library or wherever).
Another advantage of hiring an online bar exam tutor is you can meet wherever you are most comfortable. You do not have to go to an office. You can meet at home, at the library, at Starbucks, or wherever you want (so long as there is a wifi connection!). We have students meet our tutors even when they travel. This keeps everyone on track.
Further, you can meet however you are comfortable. You do not have to venture out in public. If you want to stay in your most comfortable clothes, feel free!
Technology can be an asset during sessions.
Another advantage of hiring an online bar exam tutor is that technology can be an asset. Tutors can “screen share” documents or problems with students. Tutors can type notes in a text box (which the student can save for later). Technology is improving every day and many online platforms, including zoom, allow tutors to use whiteboards and other assets.
Disadvantages of Hiring an Online Bar Exam Tutor
You may prefer the accountability of having to be somewhere.
Some students prefer to have to be at a specific place and at a specific time. They say they take the session more seriously or prepare better for it if they know they are going to be meeting someone somewhere. Thus, they prefer an in-person bar exam tutor as opposed to an online bar exam tutor.
You may prefer to meet face-to-face to feel more connected to the tutor.
If you feel disconnected when you are on a laptop, you may prefer a face-to-face meeting with a bar exam tutor. Some students like to meet bar exam tutors face-to-face because they feel a more personal connection with their tutor. This may seem small but it can make a difference.
It can be harder to explain some concepts without a pen and paper.
Some concepts are just easier and faster to explain with pen and paper. This is slowly changing as technology improves. But sometimes it is easier for a tutor to meet a student in-person to explain some tricky concepts using an old-fashioned notepad!
You may have issues with technology.
Some students do not like using technology. They have issues with signing on or with their internet being slow (which can be remedied often by moving locations or upgrading the internet!). Some of our students “practice” signing in with our customer service representatives prior to meeting with a tutor. If you do not feel comfortable with technology, then an online bar exam tutor may not be as good of an option for you.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to hiring an online bar exam tutor. If you are considering meeting a tutor online, and if you are not sure it is the right fit for you, ask if you can try out a session. That way, if it is not the right fit, you will not be committed to several sessions. And if it is, you can always sign up for more.
