How To Prepare For The MPRE Test Day Changes

The NCBE recently changed how the MPRE will be administered, starting with the March 2020 MPRE.  With the move to an electronic format and individually scheduled appointment times at various locations, things are very different!  This has understandably led to many questions on how to prepare for the MPRE test day changes.  In this post, we cover how you can be preparing for the new MPRE experience.

How To Prepare For The MPRE Test Day Changes

1. Practice MPRE questions electronically

In the past, the MPRE has been a scantron exam.  Moving forward, the MPRE will now be administered electronically. This means you need to get used to answering questions on your computer.  You will no longer get questions on paper, meaning you can’t mark them up or cross out answer choices.  Thus, to prepare for the MPRE changes, you should get used to answering questions on your computer.  Find a source of questions that you can read and answer electronically (our free MPRE course offers full simulated electronic exams).  This way, you will not have to adjust to this new format while you are taking the real exam!

2. Don’t bring a laptop

One of the more common questions we are getting is whether MPRE takers should be bringing their own laptops.  The answer is no!  You will use computers provided to you at your Pearson VUE testing site.  Don’t worry about bringing anything of your own to your testing center (other than anything you are told about in your registration instructions).  From the pictures on the Pearson VUE website of what testing conditions generally look like, it appears as though you are given a desktop computer, a keyboard, and a mouse.  While we can’t guarantee that every testing site will be identical, this appears to be the most likely setup.  Therefore, to prepare for the new MPRE conditions, you don’t need to worry about bringing your own laptop!

3. Complete the Pearson Vue tutorial

Perhaps the best way you can prepare for the MPRE test day changes is to take Pearson VUE’s tutorial that simulates the testing software.  This is truly invaluable as it lets you experience exactly how the questions will appear to you and the tools you will have at your disposal. Practice navigating from question to question and experiment with the software’s features.  Pearson VUE’s website states that the system has a built-in scratchpad, the ability to highlight and strikethrough text, flag questions for review, and more.  If you struggle with reading text on the computer, you also have the ability to adjust the font size, text color, and background scheme.  To prepare for the MPRE test day, experiment with these different options so that you know exactly how to operate the system and what appearance you want before you even walk in!
