MPT Tips for Beginners
MPT Tips for Beginners
In this post we give you some multistate performance test (MPT) tips especially for beginners! If you are just starting to approach the MPT, you may feel unsure of where to start or overwhelmed. Here, are some MPT tips that will help you get comfortable with the MPT.
MPT Tips for Beginners
First, stick with it!
The biggest reason students do not pass the MPT portion of the exam (and then do not pass the bar exam as a result sometimes) is because they do not start studying early. Plan on dedicating a few hours every week to practice MPTs. You will be very glad you did, come exam day!
This is one of the most important MPT tips for beginners because it is the number one way to improve your MPT score and your chances of passing the bar exam.
Second, get an overview of the different types of MPTs.
Having an idea of the different types of MPT tasks that you will be expected to conquer will go a long way toward helping you prepare efficiently for the MPTs. Here, we give you an overview of the different types of MPT tasks you may encounter on the MPT, as well as the tone of the task (objective or persuasive), the recipient (a lawyer or layperson), the format, etc. Get familiar with these types of MPT tasks before moving on to the next step.
Third, memorize the MPT formats.
This is something concrete you can do right from the beginning. Memorize the MPT formats. We recommend you print our (free!) MPT one-sheet. This will help you nail down the formats and approach the MPT with confidence! (You can read about the MPT one-sheet at the link and also download a PDF of the JD Advising MPT one sheet here.)
Fourth, start practicing!
Some students find it helpful to start with a baby MPT (and you can find one for free here!) or you can purchase our MPT guide here. If you do not feel like you need to take baby steps though, just try out an MPT and see how you do.
You do not need to time yourself in the very beginning but it is very important to start timing yourself quickly! Anyone can write a beautiful MPT answer if they have all day. Part of what makes the MPT portion very tricky is the time constraints!
Fifth, make sure you have the resources you need!
If you bar exam course comes with MPT questions, MPT answers, and high scoring student answers/sample answers, you are all set. If it does not, consider purchasing our MPT books as they will save you a lot of frustration/wondering if your MPT answer is passing or not.
