Three Simple Ways Law Students Can Prepare for the Bar Exam
Three Simple Ways Law Students Can Prepare for the Bar Exam
Law school in and of itself is certainly a lot of work, but every good law student knows what is just around the corner in terms of bar prep. If you are planning to take the bar exam right after graduation, that gives you a very limited time to prepare. There is just so much material to get through. However, there are many ways law students can prepare for the bar exam while still in school, taking some pressure off for the few months in between challenges. In this post, we cover three simple strategies that shouldn’t distract too much from school obligations!
Three Simple Ways Law Students Can Prepare for the Bar Exam
Three ways law students can prepare for the bar exam:
1. Take classes on bar exam subjects
The easiest way law students can prepare for the bar exam is to take classes on the subjects tested while in law school. It is important to remember, though, that not every subject is tested equally. The MBE subjects are where you are going to pick up the most points on the bar exam since they are tested on both the multiple choice and essay portions of the exam. The majority of these subjects are mandatory during your 1L year.
If you didn’t take a class on any of the MBE subjects your 1L year, take those classes in one of your remaining semesters. For the essay-only subjects, consider which subjects have appeared on your state’s bar exam the most often. In UBE states, subjects like Conflicts of Law does not appear often on the exam. But subjects like Family Law, Wills, Trusts, Secured, and Corporations, Agency, and Partnership are tested regularly.
If you’re taking the Uniform bar exam, check out this post on law school classes that will help you prepare for the UBE. Check out this post for a more in depth discussion on which law school classes help prepare you best for the Michigan bar.
2. Utilize your school’s prep resources
Law schools across the country are steadily increasing the resources available to law students to help them pass the bar. Bar exam passage rate matters to law schools and schools feel increased pressure to improve their bar exam passage rates.
Therefore, another simple way law students can prepare for the bar exam is to take advantage of these resources! Some schools offer workshops in the evenings and weekends to help you learn the strategies necessary to succeed on the bar. Other schools are even starting to offer classes for credit that will give you a jump start on your commercial course. Your law school itself is an excellent place to turn to if you are looking for ways to prepare even while you’re still a student. Considering schools have a vested interest in making sure you pass (they want their pass rates to be high!), they are more than willing to help you out. Take advantage of these workshops and classes!
3. Purchase some introductory study materials
One final way law students can prepare for the bar exam even while still in law school is to purchase some introductory study materials to start reviewing. You might not be willing to commit to a commercial course just yet or have the time to dive into intensive preparation, but you can start small. It is definitely a good idea to become familiar with the exam itself before you start your serious prep. Learn the format of the exam and get a feel for how the question structure. Then, evaluate strategies.
You can even go one step further and purchase materials that will give you a head start on learning the highly tested black letter law. You don’t have to go all the way by reviewing the tiny details of each subject while in law school. However, starting to review the most highly tested topics will still give you a nice foundation of knowledge once you start your full-time studying. Our MEE one-sheets are perfect for law student planning to take the Multistate Essay Exam. This book goes covers each subject on the exam and discusses the most critical and frequently tested black letter law. Our MBE one-sheets are similar, covering the highly tested topics in all of the MBE subjects in colorful text and charts. Purchasing these materials is an excellent way for law students to start preparing for the bar exam!
