Is A Private LSAT Tutor Really Worth It?
Is A Private LSAT Tutor Really Worth It?
There are dozens of LSAT courses, books, guides, and manuals to help guide you through your preparation for the LSAT. As a private LSAT tutor, I’m often asked if it is really worth it, or if a similar level of preparation can happen other ways. I always let students know that prep for the LSAT can take multiple forms, but that a private LSAT tutor comes with some benefits you cannot get anywhere else! Here’s our take on what advantages a private LSAT tutor offers over prep courses and books.
1. One-on-one attention
For anyone who’s attended a large LSAT prep course, you already know the pitfalls. LSAT prep courses have to teach the material in a way that doesn’t always mesh with everyone’s learning style. We hear many stories of students who get rushed and incoherent answers. Furthermore, they get virtually no one-on-one interaction with their course instructor. With the expense of LSAT prep courses rising year after year, it’s no wonder many are hesitant to commit hundreds or thousands of dollars for such a small return.
A private LSAT tutor can give you the specified attention you deserve. Instead of trying to crowbar you into their approach to teaching, he or she can instead adapt their approach to your learning style. Some students just need topics explained to them in a way their brains can more easily understand. So, do you struggle with a traditional interpretation of assumption questions? Don’t worry, a private tutor can find another way to help it make sense for you!
2. Flexible scheduling
Another downside to large LSAT prep courses is the relatively inflexible class timing. A set class schedule doesn’t always mesh with the work habits and schedules of college students or working adults. Who can commit to a course during normal working hours, or meeting every weeknight for weeks or months? What happens if your only spare time is every third weekend? Often, LSAT prep courses feel like they are scheduled when it is convenient for the instructor, not for you.
A private LSAT tutor is much more flexible. Mornings, nights, and weekends don’t usually pose scheduling problems. If you work in a job where your shifts can vary from week to week, a private LSAT tutor can adjust to your changing schedule. Need to meet at noon this Thursday, but at 8:00 p.m. the next? No prep course will accommodate you, but a private tutor definitely can!
3. Smaller commitment
What do you do if you just struggle with a particular part of the LSAT, like Logic Games? A large prep course isn’t the answer. Why would you want to sit through hours of material you already understand to get to the subject you need help with? And why pay for an entire course if you need just a little tune up work on one issue?
A private LSAT tutor can help evaluate your individual strengths and weaknesses, and only cover the material you need assistance with. Good on Logical Reasoning, but need a new approach to Reading Comprehension? A tutor can help! Competent in all the Logic Games except advanced sequencing? A tutor can jump right into problems with you! If you only need one or two sessions to diagnose and resolve your issue, why spend more of your valuable time and money covering material you do not need to?
4. Live feedback and a person to bounce ideas off of
Prep books are great resources for those who are good self teachers, but they also have a downside: they are not an actual person! There’s nothing more frustrating than struggling with a concept in a book you paid good money for, only to resort to Google to explain something. They, like courses, also have a specific way they teach the material. If it doesn’t work for you, then you’re out of luck.
A private LSAT tutor is there for you on the tough issues. Struggling with a concept between sessions? He or she is usually just a phone call or email away with an explanation!
