Many students start law school and realize that the workload is much more intense than they anticipated.  There are a number of different strategies that students can use to combat the heavy workload.  From revamping study schedules to joining a productive study group, there are no shortage of options to help you succeed in law school.  One such strategy: hiring a law school tutor.  Tutoring can be very valuable if you’re looking for one-on-one attention to run through and understand key concepts.  And, you don’t need to engage with a tutor in person!  In this post, we discuss approaching law school tutoring online.

When approaching options to help with law school, law school tutoring isn’t always part of the conversation.  This can be for a variety of reasons: some students aren’t aware that law school tutoring is an option while other students don’t know of any law school tutors nearby, so they simply write it off.  Participating in law school tutoring online, however, can be a great alternative for many law school students!

There was a time when taking part in a tutoring session wouldn’t even be possible if a tutor did not work nearby.  For many years, the norm was that tutors and students would gather together and go over materials in person.  This is simply no longer true (meaning more tutoring options for students)!

Online tutoring services can be an incredibly effective way to approach tutoring.  Students can communicate with their tutors in real-time, discuss specific portions of text using screen share features, and don’t have to spend time traveling from session to session.  With entire sessions and materials available online, students and tutors have the ability to jump right into the material when the camera starts as opposed to finding space in a local library or office building.  For most students, online tutoring is a less cumbersome option than traditional in-person tutoring services!

Students often wonder whether or not they can build the same rapport with their tutor when sessions are remote.  Like any in-person relationship, online relationships can be built over time.  Students who utilize online tutoring services can still build great relationships with their tutors! One of the advantages with online tutoring, though, is that if a tutoring relationship isn’t working, the ability to find a tutor that better suits your goals and personality is much easier to do.  Approaching law school tutoring online allows you to work with qualified law school tutors all over the globe instead of in your geographic area.  The chances of finding a tutor that best suits you is much greater online!

While online law school tutoring can be advantageous for most students, not all students will find it as useful.  First, a reliable internet connection with enough bandwidth to handle a video call is a must.  Clear calls help you make the most out of your tutoring sessions!  Not all students live in areas where this is available.  If you’re interested in pursuing law school tutoring but find yourself in this situation, working with someone in person or seeking out a place with a reliable internet connection might be a better option.

Students focusing on substantive areas of the law select a topic or subject area that they want to explore further.  Tutoring sessions on substantive areas of the law can work through concepts such as the Erie doctrine or the knock-out rule, or they can focus more broadly on topics such as easements or free speech.  Working one-on-one can help you better grasp concepts because you can talk through them and ask questions as you go.  Additionally, you will walk away from sessions with a much better idea of what you need to study and where any knowledge gaps might be.

Another way to spend tutoring sessions is to go over techniques that can help you excel in law school.  This can allow you to get tailored feedback on things such as notetaking skills and outline construction.  You can also work through how to structure a response to an exam question or how to approach and read final exam questions.  If you’re concerned about cold calls and briefing cases, your tutor can work with you on that as well. So much of what you need to do in law school focuses on having a developed skill set.  Law school tutoring allows you to get tailored feedback to help you finetune these skills, which can be invaluable as you approach final exams.
