In fact, many students who don’t feel confident end up passing with flying colors, while some who feel overly confident may not. Confidence is not a good indicator of whether you will pass. So don’t stress out if you aren’t feeling ready. Let’s explore some strategies to help you feel more confident with being unconfident before the bar exam.

Remember it’s Normal to Not Feel Ready for the Bar Exam
If you are a first-time bar exam taker, you have never taken this two-day exam before and so the element of feeling uncomfortable is very common. It can be worse if you are taking the July bar exam, because there is no doubt your classmates may be making you feel even more anxious especially if you are active on social media or belong to study groups. If you are a repeat taker, you may also feel anxious, knowing that the bar exam did not go your way the last time.
Remember that these elements make it completely normal to not feel ready for the bar exam. Most students experience a sense of worry and uncertainty as the exam approaches. Even top-performing students often don’t feel fully prepared. A little anxiety can actually be beneficial, keeping you motivated and focused.
Understanding the Grading Scale Can Boost Confidence
One way to feel more confident before the bar exam is to understand the grading scale. You do not need a perfect score to pass. For instance, if your jurisdiction requires a score of 270 out of 400, this translates to a 67.5%, which is essentially a D+. This is also SCALED which means you don’t even really need exactly that. This scaled score allows room for mistakes. You’re aiming for competence, a D+, not perfection, which can significantly reduce pressure and boost your confidence.

Reflecting on the hard work you’ve put in can help you feel more confident before the bar exam. Completing law school and months of bar exam preparation are significant accomplishments. You have probably spent a lot of time preparing for these bar exam days!

Also, remember that even if something unexpected happens, you can still pass. Let’s say you cannot sleep. It is not ideal, but many students pass the bar exam on little to no sleep! Maybe you are sick. That is also not ideal, but again, it does not mean you will not pass.
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
One of the biggest confidence killers is comparing yourself to others. Everyone prepares differently and progresses at their own pace. Trust in your own study process and avoid getting distracted by how others are preparing. This will help you feel more confident before the bar exam.
Your classmates may also exaggerate how well they are performing on practice exams or how much they are studying. Do not take it personally and do not take it too seriously. This may reflect their own lack of confidence about their performance. If they truly felt good, they probably would not feel the need to constantly advertise it.

Engage in activities that help you relax, whether it’s reading a book, watching a reality TV show, eating a nice meal, taking a bath, meditating, or spending time with friends and family.
Smart Studying the Day Before
On the day before the exam, avoid studying new material. This can lead to increased anxiety and a lack of sleep—which can obviously have a negative effect on your performance. Instead, if you MUST study, review topics you are already familiar with or go over practice questions you’ve previously completed. This will reinforce your knowledge and help you feel more confident before the bar exam without overwhelming yourself. (Better yet, take the day before the bar exam off of studying and give your brain a break!)
