Five Bar Exam Memorization Tips for Auditory Learners

1. Pay attention during lecture.

The first of our bar exam memorization tips for auditory learners is to pay attention during lecture.  As auditory learners tend to absorb more material when they hear it, watching lectures is very beneficial.  While some students find bar exam lectures to be relatively ineffective, auditory learners should not dismiss them!   It may even help if you attend a live lecture where you can have more interaction with other bar exam takers and have the opportunity to ask questions.  This allows you to verbalize your thoughts to a teacher and hear their explanation of whatever topic you are having an issue with.

2. Read your outlines out loud.

When you learn best by hearing the material explained aloud, remember that you don’t need to be listening to an outside party explain it.  Another of our bar exam memorization tips for auditory learners is to read your outlines aloud yourself.  The memorization step of bar prep is very important, and thus when you are reviewing your outlines after lecture, try reading them out loud instead of just in your head.  Auditory learners have minds that process information that it hears more efficiently than information that it sees.  Reading the outlines aloud allows you to take advantage of that strength of yours.  You could even try recording yourself reading the outlines and then playing it back, say while you are in the car.

3. Try to teach someone else the material.

The third of our bar exam memorization tips for auditory learners is to try to teach someone else the material.  If you do this exercise with someone unfamiliar with the law, don’t base the success of this exercise on how much your partner actually learned.  You can’t expect them to understand these topics with no experience.  However, the goal is for you to work through the material out loud.  It allows you to gauge how much you truly understand the rules.  If you can explain it out loud in your own words, then you are doing a very good job of reinforcing this concept in your brain.  Trying to verbalize the material, especially while doing so in your own words, will be very beneficial to your memorization!

4. Study with a partner or join a study group.

Studying with others is an excellent strategy for those who learn best by hearing.  Thus, the fourth of our bar exam memorization tips for auditory learners is to study with a partner or join a bar exam study group.  Studying with other people who are taking the bar exam allows you to collaborate on solving problems.  You can also get a different perspective on a tricky issue.  Maybe someone else can explain a concept in a different way that makes more sense to you.  Studying with someone else involves verbal communication about the material, and therefore it is of great help to auditory learners!

5. Develop mnemonics, rhymes, or songs.

While using mnemonics can be a great study tool for all bar exam takers, it is especially useful for auditory learners.  As such, the last of our bar exam memorization tips for auditory learners is to create your own mnemonics, rhymes, or songs to help you learn the material!  Sing your way through a series of elements if it helps you memorize them!  Find a way to make them rhyme or develop a phrase using the first letter of each element.  Continually repeat them out loud to yourself to learn the topic!  It might seem silly to sing a song about the elements of an attractive nuisance, but you won’t forget them that way!
