Bar Exam Failure Stories: How I Passed The Bar Exam On My Fourth Try!
Bar Exam Failure Stories: How I Passed The Bar Exam On My Fourth Try!
Bar Exam Failure Stories: How I Passed The Bar Exam On My Fourth Try!: It is no secret that the bar exam is difficult and that it is an experience like no other. For the exam taker, it’s most comparable to a marathon in terms of how much information about the law you can pack into your brain. After the bar exam, it is very likely that you are unsure as to how well you did or what was even tested. Moreover, you will have to wait months for results to come in. This can be very hard. Rest assured, however, that with proper preparation and the right attitude, you will get through it.
Because I am not a first time passer of the bar exam, I feel that I have some knowledge that may help others and make the bar exam experience less stressful and somewhat more enjoyable. Bar exam failure stories are not always positive, but I’m going to use my experience to help out others. I recommend using the following tips for maximum results.
Bar Exam Failure Stories: How I Passed The Bar Exam On My Fourth Try!
These bar exam failure stories are from previous JD Advising clients who used JD Advising on their last (successful!) attempt to pass the bar exam.
1. Find the right bar prep course.
If you are anything like me, you will find that a conventional bar prep course like Barbri isn’t tailored to your learning style. I needed more guidance and structure with my studying. JD Advising assessed my strengths and weaknesses and tailored a program that worked for me. JD Advising and its tutors have studied the bar exam and know the kind of questions/answers that the graders are looking for. They were always available to answer any questions I had. Their teaching style gives you an edge so that you go into the test feeling confident and ready to conquer whatever the bar examiners throw at you.
2. Keep work to a minimum (if possible!)
This was difficult for me to do. Even during law school, I never stopped working. I knew that working during studying for the bar exam contributed to me failing. If at all possible, take time off work or only work 1-2 days a week. Studying for the bar is a full time job in itself. Having other big time commitments may cause you more stress or take away your motivation to study. Trust me, it will be all worth it once you pass. You will have plenty of time to work afterwards to make up for the time lost.
3. Dig in and do the work!
I liked JD Advising’s methods because they followed up with me to make sure I did the work. If a tutor assigns particular sections for you to review or to complete some practice essays, you can be sure that he or she is doing it because they know what the test makers/graders are looking for. Do the work and you will find yourself getting better. The idea is to do the extra work on the highly tested material while giving you just enough material for the not highly tested subjects. This in turn saves you time and effort and will significantly help your score.
4. Don’t overthink.
If I could write only one tip for this blog, it would be this one. I struggled with this idea. It was not until I learned to stop overthinking that I saw a significant increase in my scores. This works especially well for the MBE portion. When your brain scans the answers and then you read the question, more than likely your brain has come up with the right answer instantly. It does not help you to try to change the details of the questions. The information in the question is all you need to answer the question. This works especially well when eliminating the wrong answers.
5. Take time for yourself!
It is extremely important to take time to do what you love. Make sure you take enough breaks throughout the day. Also, schedule time on evenings and weekends that do not consist of bar exam studying. It is important because you need something to look forward to besides the end of the exam. While you study, you can tell yourself that if you finish this subject, you can reward yourself with whatever activity that you enjoy. By doing this, you will find yourself not only breezing through the material but also doing more than planned.
6. Cancel out the noise.
While studying for the bar exam, and even on exam day, you will find your fellow bar takers discussing questions, subjects, passage rates, etc. Just know that is just noise and you have the power to ignore it. People have a way of putting thoughts into your head that you just do not have room for in your brain. Do yourself a favor and when possible avoid these type of people.
If you do start to doubt, just know that everyone has doubted themselves at one point while getting ready for the bar exam. To avoid a setback, you need to filter out negative thoughts and beliefs and continue to do your work. Don’t allow outside negative thoughts to take over your thoughts, especially if you are doing the work. Furthermore, the bar exam is not a race, so a competitive personality type is not needed. The only person you should be competing with is yourself! There are plenty of bar exam failure stories out there. Make sure you only associate yourself with positive ones that push you to prepare!
There is no denying that passing the bar is very important and that you would hope to only go through it once. If you need to take it more than once, take some time to re-energize and once you are done, go in with the mentality that you are in it to win it. Finally, give yourself some credit. Not everyone can make it through law school, but you did! You have this last step to complete in becoming a licensed attorney, so be good to yourself and know that there are different successes ahead of you. Don’t ever give up!
We hope these bar exam failure stories can help you pass the bar exam on your repeat attempt to pass the bar exam!
