Is The MBE Really That Bad On The Bar Exam?

Unless you’ve taken the MBE portion of the Bar Exam, there’s no way to concretely determine how you’ll fare. It seems like everyone has a different advice and opinions relating to the MBE portion of the bar exam. One search online and you’re sure to be overwhelmed with different viewpoints surrounding the MBE.  Some will say it was easier than they expected. Others will claim it was drastically harder than the practice questions they used. So, is the MBE really that bad? We discuss this in more detail below.

Is The MBE Really That Bad On The Bar Exam?

The short answer is no, the MBE can be manageable if you put the time in preparing prior to exam day.  That being said, few would consider the MBE to be easy. Be cautious about the accounts you read online. For example, maybe someone who posted about how difficult the MBE was didn’t adequately prepare. Someone who posted that the MBE portion of the Bar Exam was easy, may have already taken and passed the bar exam in another jurisdiction. Like we mentioned earlier, everyone is different and will experience things in their own way. To help clear up some ambiguities, we’ve decided to summarize our views about the MBE portion of the Bar Exam.

MBE Preparation = Quality And Quantity Both Matter

You’ve likely heard there’s a magic number of MBE questions to complete before the bar exam to ensure your success. While doing as many MBE practice questions as possible doesn’t necessarily hurt performance, it doesn’t necessarily improve it. Time management is crucial to studying and preparing for the MBE portion of the bar exam. You want to be sure you’re using your time in a way that maximizes your chances of passing. Regarding the MBE portion of the bar exam, that means using quality practice questions and taking time to review why you got practice questions wrong or right. Quality MBE practice questions are those taken from previous Bar Exams and circulated to help students prepare. We’re talking about previously tested MBE questions.  Not all bar exam prep courses offer previously tested MBE questions!

Nobody Leaves The MBE Feeling Great

No matter how hard you prepare for the MBE, it’s hard to walk out of the testing center confident. This is normal! You just took a lengthy portion of a difficult exam that you’ve been preparing for all summer or winter. You’re tired, hungry, and likely already remembering what answers you bubbled in for certain questions. In reality, most students score between 65 and 70% on the MBE portion of the Bar Exam. Generally speaking, those aren’t awesome statistics, however, for the Bar Exam, that’s all you need to pass! So, keep in mind that some online comments explaining MBE difficulty are likely made right after finishing the exam. Don’t despair!  Many students walk out of the MBE feeling the exact same way.

The MBE Is Difficult But Doable

Don’t get us wrong, the MBE portion of the Bar Exam is difficult. It’s a six-hour marathon that’s filled with tricky questions, nerves, and high levels of brainpower. The MBE is also manageable. So doable in fact that thousands of students successfully conquer the MBE portion of the bar exam every year! Like we mentioned above, you may not leave the MBE feeling awesome about your performance. However, that doesn’t mean you didn’t pass the Bar Exam. So, the is the MBE – hard? Yes. Challenging? Yes. Doable? Also, yes.
