1. Memorize the law, slow down, and stop trying to answer thousands of MBE questions.
If you have found yourself in this vicious cycle of answering a hundred MBE questions, getting them wrong, then answering a hundred more…and having the same thing happen, it is time to step back.
First, stop using questions that your commercial course made up. Instead, make sure you get some released MBE questions. We have an excellent newly-released 100-question MBE exam composed of REAL mbe questions which you can find here. You can also find other resources at the link above.
Second, take time to actually learn the law. Everyone thinks they already “know” the law. But if you are struggling with MBE questions, chances are you know the general law really well, but you do not know the nuances of the law – which is what the MBE tests.Here are some tips on how to memorize your bar exam outlines. Since you have a month to go, you want to focus primarily on memorizing the highly-tested MBE topics (rather than memorizing everything). See this chart of highly tested mbe topics.
Third, read this post on how to slow down and improve your MBE score. Get out of the vicious cycle of trying to answer 5,000 questions before the bar exam now!
2. Don’t ignore the essay portion! Start focusing on it!
Do you hear stories of people who have jobs at top firms that fail the bar exam? Or who graduate at the top of their class and fail the bar exam? This is primarily because they ignore the essay portion of the bar exam. They feel confident about their writing abilities (and not confident about the MBE) so they focus extensively on the MBE, forgetting that the essay portion is worth (in most states) about 50% of your overall bar exam score!
Do not ignore the essay portion!
When you study for the essay portion, focus on the highly-tested areas of law. You can find the most highly-tested areas of law by purchasing our MEE one-sheets (the expensive way) if you are in a UBE state or by bullet-pointing several past MEE’s (the free way). Then answer a bunch of questions and make sure what you are saying is in line with the model answer. Do not ignore this portion of the bar exam!
Lastly, if you are in a jurisdiction that administers MPTs, please read this post on five reasons to take the MPT portion seriously. The MPT portion is so important to practice – and it can give you a huge advantage on test day. Incorporate regular timed MPTs into your schedule.
3. Make sure you take timed exams.
Many bar exam takers underestimate the importance of timed exams. They don’t time themselves. They think they will magically make everything come together on test day. And they will keep an eye on the clock. And be fine. Even if they have not been fine while they are practicing.
If you are going to fail the bar, fail it because it is hard. Do not fail it because you ran out of time!
Implement a schedule where you take timed exams. I used to go to my parents’ house every Friday while no one was home and take a timed exam. I started with one hour of essay and one hour of multiple choice. Then moved it up to two hours. Then to three hours.
Not only did this ensure I stayed on track of timing, it also gave me confidence going into test day that I would not struggle with timing! Half of the battle in conquering the bar exam is a mental one.
With one month until the bar exam there is still a lot of time to make sure you are on track to pass. You can do a lot in the one month you have left!
