How do I learn everything for the bar exam?

This is a very common question as many students feel a lot of anxiety when they receive a big box of outlines from their commercial course. You can review our tips below in the video or in the post!

How do I learn everything for the bar exam? 

A few tips for those feeling overwhelmed about learning everything for the bar exam!

Tip #1: You don’t have to know everything!

You don’t have to know everything about all areas of law to pass the bar exam. What you want to focus on is what is highly tested!

For example, the topic of negligence will be tested in 12-13 multiple-choice questions and is highly tested on state essay exams (including the multistate essay exam (MEE)). So this is an important topic to focus on! By contrast, in many jurisdictions, the RAP is not tested on the essay portion (however, it does show up occasionally on the MEE) and generally there is only about one MBE question on it. So it is much more worth your time to focus on negligence than RAP, in most cases.

Tip #2: You don’t have to memorize everything in a day!

A common mistake first-time bar exam takers make is to put off  memorization until the end. Don’t make this mistake or you will feel overwhelmed because you won’t have adequate time to memorize your outlines.

Instead, start memorizing from the very first week of bar prep. This has several advantages:

• First, you will retain more information.
• Second, you will find yourself getting MBE and essay questions correct since you actually know the law!
• Third, you will gain confidence during bar prep.

You will be much less overwhelmed if you break down your memorization by week!

Tip #3: Divide your outline into increments.

Focus on just one outline (for most courses, if you focus on your lecture handout, that is sufficient). Divide it into manageable chunks. So, if you are learning Torts, divide it into intentional torts, defenses to intentional torts, privacy torts, etc. That way, you make the task manageable.

You will feel much less overwhelmed, and you will find yourself improving on your skills of memorizing.
