Five Bar Exam Memorization Tips for Kinesthetic Learners

1. Repeatedly trace flowcharts, diagrams, etc.

As kinesthetic learners learn by doing, one of our bar exam memorization tips for kinesthetic learners is to interact with the material by repeatedly drawing and then re-tracing flow charts, diagrams, etc.  Putting the rules in pictorial form is already a great bar exam study strategy, but the repetitive element of drawing them add the element of action.  This is what will help kinesthetic learners process the material.  Allow your hands to move and diagram out the rules.  Even just running your finger through a flow chart will help you remember the rules.

2. Walk around or exercise while reviewing your outlines.

Keeping a high level of activity is important for kinesthetic learners.  This is why we recommend as one of our bar exam memorization tips for kinesthetic learners that you move around or exercise while trying to memorize the material.  Perhaps you pace around your house as you read the outline.  You could also review flash cards as you run on a treadmill.  It may even help to make an audio recording of portions of your outlines and then listen to it as you run or take a walk around the block.  The important thing is that you’re moving as you review.  This gets your brain in the mental state it prefers when trying to memorize the material.

3. Act out your outlines.

This might sound silly or awkward, but the third of our bar exam memorization tips for kinesthetic learners is to act out your outlines in some fashion.  Maybe when you are dealing with a real property situation like easements and the use of property, you act out the situation to understand who has what rights on what portions of the land.  Perhaps in a contracts situation, you take on the role of each party and work through what they should have when all of the duties are completed.  You could even use little toys like dolls or action figures to act out a scene.

4. Keep your hands busy.

The fourth of our bar exam memorization tips for kinesthetic learners is to keep your hands busy while you study.  That could involve doing something academic related like typing notes or writing out portions of your outlines.  However, it could also entail using your hands in other ways.  If you talk through a problem, use your hands as you speak.  You could also try holding and fiddling with something small like a stress relief ball, a fidget spinner, or even a pencil.  Anything that keeps your body moving and your mind stimulated in some way.

5. Take breaks.

Finally, the last of our bar exam memorization tips for kinesthetic learners is to make sure you take breaks while you study.  This will give you a chance to get up and move around for a bit and let your brain regroup.  Some students find it helpful to fall into a pattern such as 1 hour of studying and then a 10 minute break.  While you’re on that break, your mind can process the concepts you have just reviewed and you can walk a bit to keep yourself stimulated.  Of course all learners should make sure they take breaks while studying, but it is extra important for kinesthetic learners!
