MEE Subjects Ranked from Most to Least Important
MEE Subjects: Ranked from Most to Least Important
If you are taking the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE), (which is administered in several states, including those that administer the Uniform Bar Exam), you may be wondering which subjects are the most important for you to know (and which ones are not as important). There are 14 subjects that are fair game for the MEE; however, as you can see from the chart above, they are not tested equally. (You can see these in the chart above and you can click on it to make it bigger. If you are looking for an updated frequency chart, check out this post.) Note: you should still study all 14 subjects and you should still know all 14 subjects! The point of this post is to tell you which ones you should spend more of your time on, particularly if your time is limited.
Note: if you are interested in the MEE topics that have been tested most frequently, don’t miss out on our MEE one-sheets. They are one of our most highly rated products!
The MEE Subjects are listed as follows:
- Agency & Partnership
- Corporations & LLCs
- Civil Procedure
- Conflict of Laws
- Constitutional Law
- Contracts
- Criminal Law and Procedure
- Evidence
- Family Law
- Real Property
- Torts
- Trusts and Future Interests
- Decedents’ Estates (Wills)
- Secured Transactions
The MEE subjects ranked from most to least important are as follows:
Most Tested:
- Civil Procedure is the most important subject. It used to be tested virtually every exam. That has started to change in recent years–we suspect that is due to the addition of Civil Procedure on the MBE. Civil Procedure was added to the MBE in 2015, and since then it has been tested less on the essays. However, nonetheless, Civil Procedure is still the most highly tested subject and the one most likely to appear on the MBE.
Frequently Tested:
- Agency & Partnership
- Corporations & LLCs
- Constitutional Law
- Contracts
- Evidence
- Real Property
- Trusts and Future Interests
- Decedents Estates
- Secured Transactions
Less Tested:
- Family law has been tested less and less in recent years. It is still important to study but it is among the MEE-specific subjects (other than Conflict of Laws) that is tested the least.
- Torts is the least tested MBE subject, and it has been combined with other subjects (like Agency). It is still important to know Torts well, however, particularly since it is an MBE subject.
Least Tested:
- Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure are tested less than other MBE subjects. (We divided them into two separate categories in the chart above.)
- Conflict of Laws is not tested very often and is not a standalone subject (meaning, you will always see it combined with another subject–usually it is tested with Civil Procedure or Family Law but has occasionally been tested with Wills).
- Commercial Paper (Negotiable Instruments) used to be tested on the MEE but no longer is. (So if you see references to that in your study material, you can ignore it!)
There are a decent amount of subjects which are tested very regularly on the MEE, which is why the “frequently tested” category is so important. As mentioned above, it is also important to not ignore any subject. The Examiners could test any of them, so you should be prepared for all of them. If you are wondering what topics are most important to know within each subject please see this post on the highly tested MEE topics within each subject.
Are all MEE topics tested the same?
Just as some subjects are more highly tested than others, certain MEE topics are also more highly tested than others! As noted above, to read more about the highly tested MEE topics within each subject, see this post. Lastly, check out our MEE one-sheets to see how the MEE topics have been tested in detail. They are one of our most highly rated products!
