Do I Need Tutoring for Law School Classes?

Many students wonder whether they should hire a private tutor to help them with their law school classes. Not everyone needs a private law school tutor. However, there are some categories of students who can truly benefit from having a private tutor.

If you are wondering whether you could benefit from a private law school tutor, examine the following types of students who generally benefit from private tutoring and see if you identify with any of them: 

Students who would Benefit from Law School Tutoring:

• If you feel “lost” in class and you are simply not understanding the law, it is better to hire a tutor sooner rather than later. It is much easier to play catch-up in the beginning of the semester rather than right before exams.
• If you do not learn well with the Socratic Method taught in law school, private one-on-one tutoring may be extremely beneficial. A tutor can explain the important black letter law to you in a much more direct way than it is taught in class.
• If you do not know what you need to do to succeed on law school exams, it might be worth it to receive at least a few hours of tutoring. A few hours of private one-on-one tutoring can give you a lot of direction and make a big difference in how you study during your final exam study period as well as a big difference in your final grade.
• If you are having trouble with a specific class (Real Property, Criminal law, Legal Writing, etc) it may be worth it to meet with a tutor for just that class.

2. Secondly, the classes that you take your first year of law school cover the material that is most heavily-tested on the bar exam. Thus, by learning the material very well in your first year, you will cut down on the amount of assistance you need to help you pass the bar exam. You will simply be decreasing the amount of money and energy that you spend during bar exam time as well as the stress you feel while you are preparing for the bar exam. One of the top indicators of passing the bar exam is doing well in your first-year law school courses.
