How to Use a Multistate Essay Exam Sample Answer

Many students use multistate essay exam (MEE) sample answers when they study for the MEE. These sample answers are available on some state’s websites (such as the Georgia Board of Bar Examiners website).

What are MEE sample answers?

They are student answers that were scored high on the actual bar exam.  MEE sample answers can be very helpful tools in analyzing how you performed on an MEE. In this post, we will tell you how to use an MEE sample answer – and how not to use it.

Do I need to use MEE sample answers?

No! Many students don’t. You do not have to use MEE sample answers when you study for the bar exam. There are pros and cons of using an MEE sample answer. The pros are they are easier to use than the NCBE promulgated answer in that they will be shorter and include less legalese. However, the cons are that they are not always 100% accurate–particularly in rule statements. So, even if you use an MEE sample answer, you should also have the NCBE-promulgated answers nearby.

How to Use an MEE Sample Answer

If you choose to use MEE sample answers when you study, we recommend comparing your answer with an MEE sample answer by examining the following things:

• Which issues did the student discuss in the MEE sample answer? Did you discuss the same issues?
• How much did the student write in their answer? If your answer was significantly shorter, consider whether you addressed the issues in enough depth.
• How were the issues in the MEE sample answer generally analyzed? Did you analyze the issues in about the same depth? Did you discuss all the salient issues? Did you focus on the same facts that the MEE sample answer addressed?
• What general conclusion did you arrive at for each issue? Was it arguably the right conclusion?

Note: Your answer will not look the same as an MEE sample answer. But you can still learn a lot from MEE sample answers.

How NOT to Use an MEE Sample Answer

Here are a few important ways you should not be using MEE sample answers:

• Do not use MEE sample answers as sources for rule statements! A lot of the MEE sample answers that we see have incorrect or incomplete rule statements! Instead, use the NCBE-promulgated answers to find your rule statements.
• MEE sample answers should not be used as a substitute for the official NCBE-promulgated answer.  You should focus on the NCBE-promulgated answer for the legal analyses and conclusions. It is true that the NCBE answer may have more legal citations and theory than you need to include. But for the general issues, rule, analyses, and conclusions, we recommend focusing on the NCBE answers.
