How many practice questions should I complete before the bar exam?
Here, we discuss the approximate number of practice questions you should complete before the bar exam. We have a video that discusses this topic as well as the basic points below.
How many practice questions should I complete before the bar exam?
In general, if you complete about 2,000 multiple-choice questions and 50 essay questions, you will be in good shape. This breaks down to about 10-20 multiple-choice questions per day and about 1-2 essay questions per day. This is the approximate number we assign our students and students who complete this number of questions, statistically speaking, are very likely to pass the bar exam.
Answering this number of questions will provide you with exposure to enough questions but also lets you spend enough time on each question so you can actually see your score improve. Quality is just as important as quantity (if not more important) in a lot of ways. It is better to answer 10 questions per day, slowly and methodically, rather than answering 100 questions per day without ever improving your skills or reviewing your incorrect answers. A lot of students get into a bad habit of answering 100 questions per day, racing through them, and getting the same score each time. This leads to increased frustration, burnout, and anxiety.
It is better to start with fewer questions and:
- answer them slowly and methodically
- dissect them to get used to the format
- make sure you truly understand the law
- make sure you have the law memorized
- figure out your strengths and weaknesses
and then slowly increase the number of questions you answer. You will start to see your score improve over time.

A warning to first-time takers!
Many first-time takers make the mistake of not answering enough essay questions (particularly performance test questions!) because they are too focused on the MBE! You will be missing out on valuable points if you ignore the essay portion of the bar exam. Remember, in most states, you do not need a minimum score on the MBE to pass. So, don’t ignore this critical portion of the exam. Make essay practice a regular part of your study schedule!
