Commonly Wrong MBE Answers To Watch Out For
Commonly Wrong MBE Answers To Watch Out For
You’ll face 200 questions on the MBE. Each of those questions will have three wrong answers and one best answer. Your job? Separating the wrong answers to find the best answer. To be successful, you’ll need to learn to work under time pressure to eliminate wrong answers. A great way to do this is to be on the lookout for common wrong answers on the MBE — this guide will help you get started!
Commonly Wrong MBE Answers To Watch Out For
Common Wrong Answer #1: Irrelevant Choices
One common wrong answer on the MBE is a choice that seems correct (and likely is an accurate statement of law) but is actually irrelevant to the issue in the question. To eliminate answer choices that have nothing to do with the MBE question, take a quick pause after reading the question. Articulate the issue being tested to yourself. If you head to the answer choices with a clear idea of the actual issue, you’ll be able to get rid of irrelevant choices.
Common Wrong Answer #2: Choices that Misstate the Law
The bar exam tests your knowledge of the law, so it should come as no surprise that the test makers would sneak in answer choices that are only slightly inaccurate. Don’t let these choices trip you up! Instead, put in the time to memorize the legal rules word-for-word during bar prep. This way, you’ll be able to catch and eliminate wrong answers that incorrectly shift the burden, inaccurately state a relationship, and other incorrect answers.
Here are some memorization tips to help you avoid this trap!
Common Wrong Answer Choice #3: Choices With Strong Language
Anytime an answer choice has strong language like “only”, “always”, or “never”, your antennae should go up. These absolutes are a good sign that an answer choice is probably wrong. Remember, the law is full of exceptions (even if an exception doesn’t apply to the question), so in many cases absolute statements will be wrong.
On some MBE questions, the best answer may jump out at you. On others, you’ll need to eliminate wrong answers to narrow down your options. Learning to identify common wrong answers on the MBE can help you get the score you need to pass the bar exam.
