Bar Exam Motivational Tips To Keep You Going!
Preparing for the bar exam can be grueling and difficult. In this post, we provide some bar exam motivational tips to keep you going strong during your prep!
Bar Exam Motivational Tips To Keep You Going!
1. You are not alone!
Remember, you are not the only person suffering during bar prep! Tens of thousands of students across the country take the bar exam each administration. They are all similarly cooped up, studying for hours and hours on end, just like you.
If being around other exam-takers does not stress you out, you may find it helpful to study with someone else once in a while. It can be a good reminder that other people are also working extremely hard and that this is not something that anyone can take lightly and do well on. If you think that other people are “slacking off” and that you are in this struggle alone, you are sorely mistaken! Even top-performing students at the best law schools have to put in serious time and effort in order to achieve success on the bar exam!
2. Remind yourself what you are working for.
Ask yourself, why did you decide to go to law school in the first place? To put “Esq.” at the end of your name? Make a lot of money at a big law firm? Fight for certain causes? Once you realize what you are working toward, create some sort of visual representation of your ultimate goal and put it up in a location near where you commonly study. That way, whenever you feel like taking yet another break, or you just can’t seem to find the energy to write one more practice essay, that goal will help remind you why you are doing all of this. You have already put in so much work between undergrad and law school, and likely spent a lot of money to get to this point. Keep pushing just a little bit longer to reach that goal!
3. Reward yourself periodically.
A typical bar exam study schedule usually spans 2-3 months. That is a long time to be holed up studying. It can be especially difficult if you are taking the bar exam right after graduating from law school and you can’t wait to have a break. Or if you have been working full time for a while and haven’t had a break in years. If you attempt to plow through those months of studying without taking a break, there is a good chance that you will become burnt out before the actual exam.
Be sure to incorporate breaks, social activities, and rewards into your schedule. You do not have to study 24/7. Consider blocking off one day a week when you will not study at all. You also don’t have to ignore all invitations for social engagements during bar prep. As long as social activities don’t detract too much from your ability to study, you should take the time to go out with your friends and do fun things!
4. Keep things in perspective.
Rather than putting an incredible amount of pressure on yourself, ask yourself what the worst thing is that can happen if you do not pass the bar exam. If you already have a job lined up, you might think that it will be losing that job (which is not always the case! Check out our post on Whether You Will Be Fired if You Fail the Bar Exam). Guess what: there are other jobs out there. Maybe you don’t want the “embarrassment” of failing the exam. Well, lots of people fail the bar exam! After you eventually pass and are a licensed lawyer, no one asks how many times it took you to pass the bar exam. Nor do people really care.
Failing the bar exam might set you back a couple of months and force you to go through the burden of studying for the exam again, but in the grand scheme of things, it isn’t really a big deal!
We hope you find these tips helpful to keep you motivated as you study for the bar exam!
