What To Eat The Day Of The Bar Exam
What To Eat The Day Of The Bar Exam
With all the stress that comes with taking the bar exam, your meals might be the last thing on your mind! In this post, we let you know what to eat the day of the bar exam!
What To Eat The Day Of The Bar Exam
1. Make sure to eat something!
Whatever you do, make sure you eat the day of the bar exam! Although you may not feel like it, your nerves and adrenaline are a poor excuse for food. Once your initial energy rush washes away on exam day, your body will need fuel to help get you through the exam. So, don’t skip meals, even if you don’t feel like them. Even something small will make a huge difference. If you can only manage a small portion, make it something nutritious like oatmeal or fruits/vegetables. You will get more consistent energy from something like that, as opposed to the sugar rush (and inevitable crash) that a PopTart or sugary cereal provides.
2. Keep your caffeine intake consistent.
It is OK to drink caffeine on exam day. However, you want to make sure you do so in moderation. If you normally drink coffee, tea, or an energy drink in the morning, feel free to do so. Skipping it entirely to reduce bar exam nerves (or to avoid having to go to the bathroom) will most likely hurt more than it helps. On the other side, don’t over-caffeinate! If you over-caffeinate, you may find that you have to use the restroom during the test (which, if you have not planned for it, may cut into valuable exam-taking time!)
Further, drinking too much caffeine can cause jitteriness. Once it wears off, you may feel tired or lethargic. So, the best plan is to try to be as consistent as possible!
3. Make sure meals are light but nutritious.
When you eat the day of the bar exam, you want to make sure you eat light but nutritious. Heavy meals like pizza or fast food are more likely to make you drowsy during the exam. So, try to stick to lighter foods like fruits and vegetables, salads, and lean proteins. They’ll provide you with plenty of mental fuel without the negative side effects. Avoid lighter fare packed with sugar, like candy and junk food. You may get an initial burst of energy, but it will be fleeting and leave you feeling tired afterward.
You can save your heavy meal and delicious dessert for a post-bar exam celebration!
4. Control your portions.
Too much of a good thing can cause issues. Even if you plan on eating healthy to provide yourself a good platform for the bar exam, eating too much can have the same effect as eating something bad for you. Remember: although it may seem like forever, you won’t be testing for more than a few hours at a time. So, if you are worried about eating too little, and having hunger distract you on test day, plan your portions out ahead of time! Figure out how much you need to eat to keep you satisfied for three or four hours. That way, you have enough to power through the exam without feeling drowsy!
Good luck on the bar exam!!
