How to Become a Lawyer like Kim Kardashian: A 2-Minute Guide
Kim Kardashian has recently made the news for declaring her intent to become a lawyer in California. She is currently studying for California’s “baby bar” exam and plans on taking the California bar exam in 2022. How can she do this without a law degree — and yet alone, without a college degree? Here we tell you how to become a lawyer like Kim Kardashian plans to!
California is one of four states that allows one to become a lawyer without a law degree by using an “apprenticeship” program. The four states that allow you to become a lawyer without going to law school are:
- California
- Vermont
- Virginia
- Washington
Each state has its own rules regarding what you must do in order to become a lawyer. They generally require you to work a certain number of hours in a law practice. In California, one must also pass the “baby bar” (which has a 20% pass rate) to continue with one’s legal studies, prior to taking the bar exam. The California bar exam does not have a high pass rate either (it has been as low as 30% recently).
There are advantages and disadvantages to becoming a lawyer like Kim Kardashian! The advantages are avoiding debt and having practical experience. But the disadvantage is that clients and employers may be skeptical if you did not go to law school. Lastly, all states require you to pass the bar exam. It is a hard exam to begin with and it is even harder if you do not attend a traditional law school! If you are interested in becoming a lawyer like Kim Kardashian, we highly recommend that you review your state’s rules very carefully and consider the pros and cons of following such a path.
