What If I Panic During The Bar Exam?!
What If I Panic During The Bar Exam?!
Emotions are certainly running high on test day and everyone is certainly on edge. The last few months have been stressful for everyone. Therefore, it is certainly not surprising that some bar exam takers reach their boiling point and panic during the bar exam. If you let those feelings take over, it can be highly detrimental to your performance. And you don’t want to let yourself down like that! Therefore, it is important to learn how to quickly calm yourself down and get back to the task at hand. In this post, we give you four steps to take if you panic during the bar exam. As long as you can bring yourself back to the moment at hand and not let the panic take you, you will do just fine!
What If I Panic During The Bar Exam?!
Four steps to take if you panic during the bar exam:
1. Stop and take a breath
If you panic during the bar exam, the first thing you need to do is to take a minute to breathe. You will not be able to continue answering questions successfully if you are overwhelmed to the point where you can’t think straight. You need to have a frame of mind that is clear of all things but the law. So take a moment and just breathe through your anxiety. Relax for a second, close your eyes, and try to calm yourself down. Don’t worry about any time you might waste doing this.
In the long run, those seconds you spend breathing through your panic will leave you in better shape to perform better on the rest of the exam than if you had continued while losing control. This moment is just mind over matter. You can take back your control if you just take a quick break to breathe and then re-focus.
2. Block out your surroundings
After you’ve got your breathing under control, the second thing to do if you panic during the bar exam is to block out your surroundings. Don’t let anything distract you from what you are there for. Don’t worry about the person next to you who is flying through questions, seemingly unphased. Forget about the person who has finished early, or who constantly gets up to use the bathroom. None of these things are important. The only thing that matters is you completing this exam to the best of your abilities. Put yourself in your own personal bubble and try not to be influenced by what anyone around you is doing. Nothing like that is worth getting worked up over. Focus on yourself as this is the only thing you can control. If you block everything else out, you eliminate potential distractions that can affect your mental state.
Sometimes it helps to wear earplugs or physically cover your eyes so that you don’t see anything besides your own desk space.
3. Focus on the light at the end of the tunnel
The bar exam is the end of a grueling journey. You’ve worked so hard over the last few months, putting in so much effort to succeed on this test. This is the last thing you have to conquer before you can begin a brand new journey. After studying for so long, it’s no surprise that you’re overwhelmed, which could certainly lead to panic during the bar exam. But as you attempt to re-focus, think about how close you are to being done! All you have to do is survive a few more hours and then you get a well-deserved break. So if you start to panic during the bar exam, remember that this is what you have been preparing for. Just give everything your best effort for a little longer, you don’t want to give up now! One last push and then it is over.
4. Move on to a new question
You are not going to know absolutely everything on the bar exam. It just isn’t possible. And no one else in that room with you is going to know everything either. The final thing to do if you panic during the bar exam is just to move on to something else and come back to what you’re struggling with later. Don’t let not knowing one answer bring you down and affect your performance on the rest of the exam. Move to a new question that hopefully, you will have more success with. Keep your confidence up and don’t let a few bad questions get you down! You don’t have to be perfect to pass the bar exam!
