Struggling to Improve your MPT Score? Some Tips to Help!
If you are struggling to improve your MPT score, keep in mind that you are not alone. Many students struggle with the MPT. And many do not even realize they are struggling with the MPT until after the bar exam is over! So, it is good you are aware of this now!
Here are some tips that can help you boost your score.
Struggling to Improve your MPT Score? Some Tips to Help!
1. Figure out what you are struggling with.
There are a variety of components of the MPT you may be struggling with. For example, you may struggle with one, several, or all of these components:
- timing (i.e. completing the task in 90 minutes)
- format (i.e. not sure how to format tasks)
- unfamiliarity with task in general (i.e. not knowing where to start)
- struggling with how to write (i.e. persuasively, objectively, etc.)
- dissecting an answer to figure out how you would have done on the MPT.
Perhaps you struggle with more than one item above — you may even struggle with all of them! That is okay. Once you can name it, you can figure out how to best move forward!
2. Next, figure out how you can move forward to conquer these various aspects of the MPT that you may be struggling with.
If you struggle with multiple points above, start with the most specific things rather than the general things. For example, if you struggle with timing and formatting your MPT, start by learning how to format your MPT. (This might improve your timing as well!).
Here are some tips that correspond to the above points:
If you struggle with timing, a few tips are:
- Make it a point to practice more MPTs.
- When you practice answering an MPT, outline your answer as you are reading the file and library. In other words, you don’t have to “read” and then “write” — you can write and take notes while you read the file and library.
- Pay close attention to the task memo to make sure you are staying on task. You might be wasting time on something that is not relevant!
- Make sure to not brief every case. This takes up a lot of time and is unnecessary.

If you struggle with the MPT format, check out our MPT one-sheet. We tell you how to format every type of MPT.
If you struggle with unfamiliarity with a task in general, it may be worth it to invest in our MPT guide. We have “baby MPTs” that can get you familiar with each type of MPT available. Another way to do this is to practice more!
If you are struggling with writing persuasively or objectively, check out these tips on how to approach each type of MPT. (We also link to specific examples of persuasive v. objective writing).
If you are struggling with dissecting MPT answers, we highly recommend consulting both the NCBE point sheets and MPT sample student answers once you are done writing an MPT. It is not a good idea to use just the point sheet or just the student answer. But, using both together is very helpful. The point sheet will give you the NCBE’s view. The student answer will reveal the format and also show you, realistically, what you can accomplish in 90 minutes. Here, we tell you where to find MPT sample answers.
3. Practice, practice, practice!
The most important thing if you are struggling to improve your MPT score is to practice! Start with baby MPTs in our MPT guide if you are intimidated by this step! And check out our MPT study schedule if you don’t know where to start! The best thing you can do is set aside dedicated time each week.
If you are looking for one-on-one help and feedback, it is also a great idea to check out our bar exam private tutoring options. Many students see improvement on their MPTs with just one session (though it is more common to sign up for three to five).
Good luck studying for the MPT!
